    The General Squires V.F.W. 3113 came to order September 18, 2018 at 7:30 PM with President Joyce presiding. Guard Susan closed the doors. Conductress Marge checked 15 member cards. Chaplain Linda gave the opening prayer and Patriotic Instructor Roman gave the patriotic instructions. We all said the Pledge of Allegiance. 
    President Joyce introduced District 6 President Paula Waterfield. 
    Secretary Zona read the previous minutes and they were approved. She read a Thank You from the Harold Lohn family. The Golden Rule Department newsletter was then read. Fall conference will be in Ogallala October 5-7. It will be homecoming for Gary and Linda. Treasurer Cheryl gave her report and it will be put on file. Decided to get a new auxiliary flag that will have just V.F.W Auxiliary on it. Decided to do the Trunk or Treat on October 31 around the square. 
    President Joyce and Chaplain Linda did the initiation for Tammy Howey and she was welcomed into the auxiliary. Resident Joyce and Virginia Roskilly came forward and had Virginia’s son Brian pin her 50 year pin on her. She has been an auxiliary member for 50 years. President Joyce closed the meeting and Chaplain Linda gave the closing prayer. Lunch was served by Linda and Joyce. Next month’s Hostess will be Janice and Marge.

    The Dorothy Vorderstrasse Huge Scholarship Fund (the "Scholarship Fund”) and the Harry and Reba Huge Foundation (the “Foundation”) will be awarding $40,000 in scholarships to four students who plan to begin college in fall 2019 and are graduating from a high school in Thayer, Nuckolls, Webster, or Franklin Counties, or from Wymore Southern High School, in spring 2019.

Sponsored by the U.S. Wheat Associates and Foreign Agricultural Service, USDA, the Chile-Ecuador Wheat Trade Mission brought representatives from these countries who are involved with the wheat trade

    Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is July 27, and this year marks the 65th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. To celebrate this occasion and honor the Nebraskans who served in Korea, Governor Ricketts will be hosting a special event at the Capitol to honor Korean War Veterans with Ambassador for Peace Medals.

    After serving both God and the Fairbury community for over 30 years, Pastor Charles Schmidt of Grace Lutheran Church has retired. His wife, Brenda, who has served Grace Lutheran as Parish educator since 1999, has also retired.
