    Diller-Odell, Thayer Central Find Positives In First Round Losses At State Volleyball

    The Thayer Central and Diller-Odell volleyball teams ended their seasons on Thursday evening in Lincoln during the first round of state volleyball, but not without a fight from both squads.

    The Thayer Central and Diller-Odell volleyball team’s ended their seasons on Thursday evening in Lincoln, but not without a fight from both squads.
    Six seed in the Class D-1 state tournament, Diller-Odell, met three-seed Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family for the first time in 2018 and when all was said and done with the match that took place at Lincoln East High School, both team’s reached a fifth set from the first time in 2018.

    GACC 48, Thayer Central 14

    Third-seeded Guardian Angels Central Catholic jumped out to a 36-0 by halftime and never looked back in the first round of the Class D-1 playoffs.
    Thayer Central ended the game with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both Logan Wiedel passes inside the red zone. Kevin Burd was on the receiving end of one touchdown while Jarod Hergott caught Wiedel’s second TD throw. The Titans were unable to get their usually strong running game going as they gained 23 yards on 24 rushes, but Wiedel was able to throw for 202 yards on 13-of-34 passing.

    Putting in 300 plus miles of running over the summer finally paid its dividends.
    Returning from a sophomore season where she placed 47th at the state cross country, Fairbury junior Josephine Blatny took to the Kearney Country Club on Friday to embark upon her second state cross country race in Class C.

    It’s one that the Thayer Central football team faced on Friday when they traveled to take on top-ranked BDS on their home field in the team’s regular season finale, dropping the game 46-12.

    Neither were ideal finishes, but the Fairbury and Thayer Central volleyball team’s came away from the Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament with at least a .500 record and a good idea of what they need to work before postseason play starts in 10 days.
