Third Round: Wilber 4 Gordon-Rushville 0
Not one, not two, not three, but 10 Gordon-Rushville batters were struck out by Wilber ace Josh Kalkwarf in the team’s 4-0 victory in an elimination game at the Class C Senior Legion State Tournament on Monday in Albion.
The strike out total tied his season high. He allowed four hits, no walks, and threw 72.5 percent of his 80 pitches for strikes in the seven-inning contest.
Both team’s were tied up 0-0 after three innings of play and Wilber finally broke the scoreless game in the top of the fourth with a Coltin Rezabek double, and singles from Preston Lee and Tanner Sand. Tad Moldenhauer also made it to base in the frame on a walk.
Gordon-Rushville’s biggest threat to score was in the first inning when they put a runner on first and second base with singles from the No. 2 and No. 3 batters in their lineup, but Kalkwarf sat down their cleanup hitter and No. 5 hitter with strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Moldenhauer’s one-out single ignited Wilber’s two-run sixth inning that saw a total of three hits, a walk, and a fielder’s choice. Sand sent Moldenhauer to third base in the following at bat at the top of the order with a double and Dillon Rieschick drove both runners home on a single in the No. 3 spot of the order after a Cooper Bates Walk.
Wilber outhit Gordon-Rushville 8-4 while each team committed one error.
Lee and Sand led Wilber with two hits apiece.
The victory sets up a semifinal matchup with David City, who has yet to be defeated in the tournament and beat Wilber in last year’s Class C Senior Legion Tournament state title game. The game will be at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. If Wilber wins, they’ll play the winner of Pender and DCB to see who will get a matchup with David City in the winner-take-all tournament finale on Wednesday.
