Leading up to Friday’s game at Meridian, Diller-Odell senior Emily Swanson’s career-high scoring mark was at 18 points.
The 5-foot-7 post player reset that mark in a big way with a 29-point effort during the Griffins 62-46 win over Meridian. Swanson shot 77 percent from the field (10-of-13) and was 9-of-17 from the free throw line.
Diller-Odell junior Addison Heidemann tallied four 3-pointers for the second straight game on her way to a 19-point outing.
The Diller-Odell girls basketball team kept their winning ways going to start the season. The Diller-Odell boys were unable to accomplish the same feat.
The Class D-1 Lady Griffins downed Class C-1 Falls City 41-35 on Tuesday at home to improve their record to 3-0.
Diller-Odell was up by double digits a majority of the game before Falls City closed the gap in the fourth quarter. The Griffins had a 31 18 at halftime and a 39-24 advantage heading into the final frame.

It grew even greater when the Griffins made a first-round exit from the Class D-1 state volleyball tourney in 2018 in a five-set loss to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.
At the 2019 state tournament, Diller-Odell channeled their previous postseason shortcomings into motivation that left the Griffins holding the trophy they so deeply coveted – and the first in school history.
When the match started in Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer’s favor, Diller-Odell head coach didn’t hit the panic button.
And neither did her team.
HTRS took a 6-2 lead in the first set of Thursday’s first-round Class D-1 state volleyball match. Jurgens showed faith in her team by not calling a timeout and her team proved her right.
Diller-Odell followed with a 14-7 run and HTRS never got closer than four points the rest of the set.
Tri County, Thayer Central, and Wilber-Clatonia each qualified for the state football playoffs, which will begin starting on Thursday.
The Trojans earned an 11-seed and they’ll head to Southern for a first-round matchup in Class D-1 with the sixth-seeded Raiders. Coincidentally, the contest will kickoff 13 days after the teams met in the regular season.
Southern won the teams first matchup on Oct. 18 by the score of 22-18. The contest was Tri County’s season finale as they had a bye week in the final week of the regular season.
Through 29 games and up until Friday’s Pioneer Conference Championship, Diller-Odell had 28 wins and all came by way of a sweep.
That fact changed against Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer on Friday as the Titans won the first two sets.
Then the Griffins showed why their the top-ranked team in Class D-1 with three consecutive set wins to become conference champions in five sets (24-26, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 15-2).
