A hotly contested game from beginning to end, Meridian’s girls basketball team knew what it had to do to win Tuesday night (Dec. 8) against Deshler. The Mustangs came out with a 24-23 victory, thanks to a stellar fourth quarter shooting.
The Mustangs were down 5-7 after one period with Ally Kort knocking in four of five of Meridian’s points. In the second period Jaala Stewart hit a three-pointer for the only score for Meridian. The Mustangs were down 17-8 at the half.
Meridian’s girls basketball team had a solid outing against Dorchester on Dec. 4 to start the season. If it were not for a cold spell scoring in the second quarter, the outcome may have been different. The Longhorns defeated Meridian 42-27.
Dorchester came out to lead 16-6 after one period and then a 15-0 second quarter put the Longhorns up 31-6. Undaunted, Meridian outscored Dorchester 21-11 in the second half.
It was a long list of high-level colleges requesting the services of Diller-Odell senior setter Addison Heidemann, but Iowa State won out.
“It felt like home there. The coaches and staff are amazing and I know I will get better under their coaching. They have a great program and fan base and the campus just felt like home,” Heidemann said last week after signing at Diller-Odell High School.
Other schools recruiting Heidemann included North Dakota State, Virginia, Wyoming, Pepperdine, South Dakota State and Montana State.

Central Valley’s Shaye Wood won a state title in Class D at 120 pounds a season ago.
Meridian’s Lane Barton was unable to qualify for state last season in Class D at 113 pounds.
On Saturday at the Elgin Public Pope John Invite you would have been hard-pressed to believe that was the case.
The unranked Barton met Wood in the 126-pound championship match of the 21-team tournament on Friday and the Central Valley defending state champion came away with a 2-0 victory over the Meridian junior.
