Central Valley’s Shaye Wood won a state title in Class D at 120 pounds a season ago.
Meridian’s Lane Barton was unable to qualify for state last season in Class D at 113 pounds.
On Saturday at the Elgin Public Pope John Invite you would have been hard-pressed to believe that was the case.
The unranked Barton met Wood in the 126-pound championship match of the 21-team tournament on Friday and the Central Valley defending state champion came away with a 2-0 victory over the Meridian junior.

Thirty-five years ago Meridian went to six-man football. Numbers have fluctuated since then and the Mustangs have found themselves back in the realm of six-man football.
“Numbers were the big reason (for going to six-man). We have had anywhere from eight to 11 kids at practice. We just have a couple of low boys numbers classes coming through the high school right now,” John Adam, first-year head football coach for Meridian said.
