Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock was recently appointed to the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO) Board of Directors serving as the Southeast Region Director.
NACO was organized in 1894 and formally incorporated in 1968. It is composed of 93 member counties.
80 units of blood were collected at the Red Cross Bloodmobile held Tuesday, January 12, at the Fairbury Elks Club. There were eight first-time donors and eight Power Red donors. Four blood donors achieved milestone donations. LaMoyne Hardenburger has donated 18 gallons, Ken Nance has donated 20 gallons, Jan Nance has donated 14 gallons and Lois Kroeker has donated 10 gallons.

As students head back to school, they’ll do so with additional masks to help them safely learn during this pandemic.
Reinke Manufacturing donated nearly 2,000 masks to area schools. Reinke president, Chris Roth, delivered the donations – enough for every student at the following schools: Deshler Public Schools, Deshler Lutheran, Thayer Central, Republic County and Bruning-Davenport/Shickley Schools.
Don Mahlman was one of four brothers who all served in the service. They were far enough apart in age that only one was serving at any time.
Don was offered a teaching job at Keya Paha High School, at the same he received his draft notice.
In addition, he only had four toes on one foot, but Don elected to go to the service anyway. After completing his basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado, Don was given the job as company clerk which he retained until his discharge.
E. R. Robert Kluge presented Homer L. Ward his certificate as the Elks Veteran of the Month for June.
Homer began his 16 week basic training on March 10, 1953 at Breckinridge, KY. He then completed 8 week of leadership training.
As I awaited my transfer from Fort Lewis, WA to Japan, the 1st Sergeant learned that I had barbering skills and they began sending everyone to me for hair cuts and this continued on the ship to Japan. It also allowed me to avoid guard duty and K.P. Eventually I earned more money as a barber than a soldier on the trip.
Exalted Ruler, Robert Kluge, presented Roscoe Beachler with the Elks Veteran of the Month at their meeting on May 20, 2020. Roscoe and four of his buddies all joined the Navy at the same time.
They were assigned to Camp Pendleton in California for their basic training. Roscoe then went to Bainbridge, Maryland for further training. He returned from Bainbridge and was married. He was then stationed in Guam where he served as the Company Clerk.
Roscoe was honorably discharged as an E-5 at the end of his Navy career.
Robert Kluge, Exalted Ruler at the Fairbury Elks Lodge 1203, has named Tiffany Pfaff as Elk of the Year and Wayne Weichel as Officer of the Year.
Tiffany, a 15-year member, has helped at many projects around the Fairbury Lodge especially selling tickets for the Scholarship drawing. This year the Fairbury Lodge was required to change the accounting system to match the codes from the National Elks Reporting system. Tiffany spent nearly a month completing the task and updating the system for the Fairbury Lodge.
Each year during the Nebraska Safety Council Conference and Trade Show, the work of organizations that have made a difference in workplace safety, is recognized by the Nebraska Safety Council.
FHS Class of ‘74 Celebrates 45th Reunion---The 1974 grads of Fairbury High School gathered at Camp Jefferson the weekend of Sept. 13-14. On Friday night they enjoyed a meal together and visited about their high school years and catching up on where they are now. On Saturday evening the class held a Husker party at Camp Jefferson. Attending the reunion were back row, left to right, David Seggerman, Doug Roelfs, Mark Schoenrock, Joel Fredrickson, Mark Hansen, Gary Griffee and Dan Ebbers.
