Meridian’s girls basketball team had a solid outing against Dorchester on Dec. 4 to start the season. If it were not for a cold spell scoring in the second quarter, the outcome may have been different. The Longhorns defeated Meridian 42-27.
Dorchester came out to lead 16-6 after one period and then a 15-0 second quarter put the Longhorns up 31-6. Undaunted, Meridian outscored Dorchester 21-11 in the second half.
Fairbury softball standout Ellie Ohlde signed to play softball for Peru on Monday.
“What sealed the deal for me signing was knowing I couldn’t just stop playing softball. My high school coaches helped me build a love for the game and once I met Peru’s coaching staff and some of the players I knew Peru softball was going to be a great fit,” Ohlde said. “Peru was the only college I reached out to because I knew I wanted to go there for the academics, so it was just a matter if I wanted to play or not.”
It was a long list of high-level colleges requesting the services of Diller-Odell senior setter Addison Heidemann, but Iowa State won out.
“It felt like home there. The coaches and staff are amazing and I know I will get better under their coaching. They have a great program and fan base and the campus just felt like home,” Heidemann said last week after signing at Diller-Odell High School.
Other schools recruiting Heidemann included North Dakota State, Virginia, Wyoming, Pepperdine, South Dakota State and Montana State.
Last year Diller-Odell won its first volleyball championship. ‘Champion’ had such a nice ring to it, however, ‘Repeat Champion’ or ‘Back-to-Back Champion’ has a much bigger feel.
Diller-Odell started their path to a second Class D2 title at the state tournament Thursday morning. It was a bright-and-early wake up call for the Griffins against Nebraska Christian.
It is obvious to spectators that the Tri County football squad loves to play. That love of football and competition were on display at a high level Friday night as the Trojans faced Weeping Water in the third round of the Class D1 football playoffs.
The Trojans weathered an early storm by the Indians to prevail 44-28.
Weeping Water struck first with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Mortimer to Zack Smith. On the next possession, Tri County used its patented running game to put Jack Holsing in the end zone from 12-yards out to tie the contest.
Diller-Odell’s volleyball team played trick-or-treat Saturday night. They tricked their opponents, Cody-Kilgore, into a neutral game at Neligh-Oakdale High School and treated the Griffin fans with a district title and state tournament berth.
The Griffins won in straight sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12.
Karli Heidemann had 14 kills to lead Diller-Odell while Addison Heidemann and Madelyn Meyerle each had five kills.
Elecea Saathoff, Ava Lovitt and Lily Swanson each had four kills.
