On Monday Fairbury High School softball starting third base player Brittyn Wentz signed with Southeast Community College-Beatrice to play for the Storm next season on a softball scholarship.
For Wentz, she had long been eyeing SCC as her destination to continue her softball career and is glad to finally make it official.
“It is kind of a relief to get this over and done with and know I am committed to somewhere,” Wentz said. “I was set on SCC in the first place, but I reached out to other colleges to expand my opportunities.”
Meridian hosted Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer (HTRS) on Thursday (Oct. 22) in volleyball and the Mustangs came up short, 18-25, 15-25, 16-25.
On Tuesday (Oct. 20) the Mustangs faced Dorchester and won in straight sets, 25-21, 25-16.
Monday night (Oct. 26) the Meridian Mustangs defeated the McCool Junction Mustangs in sub-district action at Shickley in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13.
No individual stats for Meridian were available as of press time.
The chilly conditions last Friday (Oct. 23) in Kearney may have affected times at the state cross country meet, however, excellent times were still produced by area athletes.
Tommy Lokken, the stoic Wilber-Clatonia senior cross country runner, finished fifth overall in the Class C division with a time of 16:54.8. W-C teammate Dawson Hoover was 30th (17:41.2).
For the Fairbury Jeffs, Erica Mosher was the lone representative for FHS and finished 87th with a time of 23:11.9.
The last time Thayer Central hosted a playoff football game was 2005. Some of the players had not yet been born, some of the community members not familiar with a solid foundation of fundamentals to which to build a championship.
The Titans are at the precipice of just that, going 6-3 this year with several school records set and a foundation laid for the future.
“It just felt like the right time to step aside,” Taylor Biehl, Head Softball Coach for Fairbury High School, recently said of her decision to retire from the position.
It had a pay-per-view heavyweight fight feel. The media had come out in full force, the stands were packed and the competitors were ready for action.
Two area juggernauts of football, Tri County and Thayer Central, faced off Friday night at Tri County in football and the atmosphere had that big fight feel.
