In arguably the toughest subdistrict in Class C-2 for girls basketball, Thayer Central’s season came to a conclusion on Tuesday at Fairbury High School against Superior, who is ranked fourth in the classification according to the Lincoln Journal Star.
The Titans upset Superior in Hebron on Jan. 10 by the score of 48-42 but that was far from the case on Tuesday as the high-powered Wildcats took a commanding 17-10 lead in after one quarter of play behind a dominant performance by 2020 Husker volleyball recruit Kalynn Meyer, who was blocking shots at a high clip.
By the time all was said and done with the talent-laden District D-1 tournament at Plainview High School, Thayer Central head wrestling coach Josh Bowers and Meridian head wrestling coach Chris Placek couldn’t have asked for any more effort from their teams.
Competition was not lacking at the tournament as top-ranked Plainview was the host and five of the eight state-dual teams participated at the two-day event.
The Titans improved their season record (13-7) to the second-highest win percentage in the Fairbury Journal-News coverage area for girls basketball teams on Tuesday with a 15-point win on the road against the Cardinals. Thayer Central outscored Doniphan-Trumbull 15-6 in the first quarter and 12-5 in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans got back on the winning track on Tuesday in a road game after losing two straight games to end the Pioneer Conference Tournament a week ago. The meeting between the Class C-2 teams was the first this season. Tri County improved their record to 14-8 with the win. HTRS fell to 6-14 with the loss.
Thayer Central saw their hopes of advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament come to an end on Tuesday as both the boys and girls teams fell in the quarterfinals finals of their respective brackets.
The Thayer Central girls, the No. 4 seed, fell to the red-hot Sutton Mustangs that have won 10 consecutive games. Sutton started the season with a 1-5 record and are now 12-6 with four more games left in the regular season.
By the end of Saturday’s Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament at Milford High School four area wrestlers were crowned champions and another 12 brought home medals from the 10-team event.
Fairbury’s Seth Firmanik earned his third conference title, doing so at 195 pounds. Wilber-Clatonia claimed three gold medals as Tommy Lokken (132), Colby Homolka (138) and Tad Moldenhauer (152) each won their respective weight classes. The trio’s effort played a large role in the Wolverines placing third as a team.
From Wilber-Clatonia winning a team title to eight area wrestlers winning their respective weight classes, area grapplers put on a show on Friday at the Thayer Central Invite.
A total of seven Wolverine wrestlers placed in the top four to claim a team championship at the 15-team tournament. Tommy Lokken (132) and Colby Homolka (138) each won individual titles via 5-0 records.
One of the top scorers in the Fairbury Journal-News coverage area this season, Thayer Central senior Sydney Havel, continued her productive season at the Thayer Central Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
As a result, the Lady Titans came away from their home event with a championship trophy.
Havel started the two-day event with a 22-point outing in Thayer Central’s 51-43 win on Friday over Johnson County Central.
