Wolverines’ 220-pounder Trevor Kvasnicka swiftly ended the Cardinals momentum with a pin in 1 minute against Nicky Lopez, giving Wilber-Clatonia a 42-39 lead. Eric Escobar needed anything but a loss to the Wolverines the dual and he did just that by defeating Ivery Hoyos via a 5-1 decision at heavyweight.
From Wilber-Clatonia winning a team title to eight area wrestlers winning their respective weight classes, area grapplers put on a show on Friday at the Thayer Central Invite.
A total of seven Wolverine wrestlers placed in the top four to claim a team championship at the 15-team tournament. Tommy Lokken (132) and Colby Homolka (138) each won individual titles via 5-0 records.
A total of four Wilber-Clatonia wrestlers went undefeated on Tuesday at the their home triangular featuring Seward and Platteview.
Unlike a conventional triangular that features duals between all three teams, Tuesday’s competition put wrestlers in each weight class in a round robin.
Tommy Lokken (132), Colby Homolka (138), Sawyer Kunc (160) and Eric Escobar (285) each went 3-0 for Wilber-Clatonia. Escobar and Kunc each tallied three pins while Homolka and Lokken each won two contested matches and received a forfeit.
A pair of Wilber-Clatonia wrestlers went undefeated on Saturday at the Wilber-Clatonia Duals.
Tad Moldenhauer (152) and Nathan Patak (126) tallied 4-0 records in their respective weight classes for the Wolverines, who went 1-3 in dual meets at the seven-team tournament.
Wilber-Clatonia’s lone dual win came against Johnson County Central by the score of 39-24. Eric Escobar (285), Miguel Jaimes (120), Patak (126) and Trevor Kvansicka (220) each picked up contested wins in the dual victory. Johnson County Central forfeited three matches to Wilber-Clatonia.
Wilber-Clatonia’s six-game win streak to start the season came to an end on Friday at the Malcolm Holiday Tournament.
The Wolverine boys were defeated by Oakland-Craig in the first round of the tournament 54-34.
The Knights used a balanced offensive attack that saw eight players score points by the end of Friday’s contest. Colton Thomsen scored a team-high 11 points and Coulter Thiele tallied 10. Wyatt Seargren and Gunnar Ray recorded nine points apiece.
With only 2 seconds remaining in regulation, Wilber-Clatonia junior Nevaeh Honea stepped to the free throw line with her team trailing by two points on Thursday on her team’s home floor.
Honea needed to sink both shots to send her team into overtime and the guard did just that. Her free throw conversions tied the contest at 30-30, giving the Wolverines the clear momentum for the final four minutes of play.
Wilber-Clatonia junior Tommy Lokken put the icing on the cake for his team during their run to five straight dual wins and a championship on Thursday at the Palmyra Dual Tourney.
Lokken, who was not ranked in Class C at 132 pounds, downed No. 1 Class D Ryan Payne of Centennial by the score of 7-2.
The Wolverines went on to beat Centennial 53-22 in the final dual of the evening for Jaime Bates squad.
