Barton Nearly Upsets Defending State Champ

By Nathan Heuer
Central Valley’s Shaye Wood won a state title in Class D at 120 pounds a season ago.
Meridian’s Lane Barton was unable to qualify for state last season in Class D at 113 pounds.
On Saturday at the Elgin Public Pope John Invite you would have been hard-pressed to believe that was the case.
The unranked Barton met Wood in the 126-pound championship match of the 21-team tournament on Friday and the Central Valley defending state champion came away with a 2-0 victory over  the Meridian junior.
Barton pinned Gabe Wortman of Quad County East and Juan Davatos of Twin River to reach the finals on Saturday.
The junior tallied 20 of his team’s 38 points with the victories and runner-up finish.
Zacharia Kerwood tallied the additional 18 team points with a third place finish at heavyweight.
Kerwood was pinned by top-ranked Class C Jakob Jerabek of Arcadia/Loup City in the semifinals before two straight matches by fall. Kerwood pinned Pender’s Eric Hathaway in 30 seconds in the heavyweight third-place match.
Meridian placed 15th as a team. Plainview won the meet by 89.5 points with a score of 194.5. Twin Loup, the 10th ranked team in Class D according to NEwrestle, placed second.
Meridian’s next competition will be at the Fillmore Central Invite on Jan. 4.
