When my father was growing up, men wore suites and ties and hats. They wore them everywhere. They got dressed up to go to the movies or even just to hang out at a bar, drinking with their buddies.

I was born in the sixties. Hats had largely been relegated to “old-timer” status by then. I blame President Kennedy. He was the coolest of the presidents and one of the few that American men wanted to emulate. (For example, the election of FDR did not see a spike in overlong cigarette holders.) Kennedy was almost never seen wearing a had, so hats went out of favor.
