Do you think putting criminal mug-shots on the front page of the paper has any effect on deterring criminal activity in our area?

Get Involved
The weekly questions are a great way to get the community talking. Everyone has an opinion, it's just difficult to get people to make that opinion known outside of the coffee shop I guess.

Fairbury City Administrator Joe Parker’s contract was renewed with the city for another year. How would you rate his perfomance over the past year?

Wondering Why
A week or so ago you put the pictures of two alleged "procurers" on the front page. In this issue you put the picture of an alleged burglar/sexual assailant on the front page (your lead story, no less!).
You put the picture of an Eagle Scout (with his parents and Scoutmaster) on almost the last page (6B) of the second section.
What's your priority? Do you want to highlight and publicize the best or the worst of your town? I don't live in Fairbury, but from the look of your front page, Fairbury is rife with all sorts of lowlifes. No wonder your population is plummeting ... who would want to live there?
To add insult to injury, Vicki Check wrote a very nice article about Eagle Scout Richard Rhoden. Nowhere in the entire column did she mention Scout Rhoden's last name. She ended the column with birthday greetings, complete with photo, to her mother. Could she have put the greetings and photo elsewhere ... perhaps with other "Lifestyles" news ... and given this young man the recognition he has earned, without distraction?
Good things are happening in southeast Nebraska, and good people are doing them. I'd like to know more about them.

I have a great deal of respect for Officer Sprunk. He is the only local candidate being interviewed for the chief’s position. However, because of some of the questions and apprehensions from within the department of having a “local” chief, I think it would be best to hire an outside candidate with no ties to the existing department or to our community. There has been a pre-conceived but incorrect notion in our community that you get treated certain ways depending on who you are in Fairbury. The best way to end that speculation is to bring someone in with no connection to the department, who, can set up the department how he wants and start with a clean slate so to speak.

Do you think Fairbury will be better served by someone who is already involved with our community rather than someone from outside of our community for Police Chief?
