After being convicted or serving time for a criminal offense, one of the most important, yet hardest, things to do is to find a job. Typically, terms of probation include maintaining employment. Yet, many employers are reluctant to give someone with a record the opportunity for a second chance, fearing the risk is just too great.
Like many other risks, there is now an insurance policy that covers this possibility.

The death of a two-year-old boy in Fairbury Friday night (February 26) has resulted in an arrest.
According to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the apartment building at 720 J Street in Fairbury for a welfare check on a female subject living at the residence.
Last year, Senator Tom Brewer, District 43, introduced Legislative Bill (LB) 153 at Governor Pete Ricketts’ request to exempt 50 percent of military retirement income from state income taxation. The Governor noted, “The bill passed without a single vote of opposition, which signifies the great support for veterans here in Nebraska. I signed LB 153 into law in August.”
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Nebraska Public Health Lab (NPHL) have confirmed the first known cases of the California variant of COVID-19, known as B.1.429 in the state. Thirteen cases in four different health jurisdictions have been identified, including two cases in the Public Health Solutions District, which includes Jefferson, Thayer, Fillmore, Gage and Saline counties. Nine cases have been identified in Douglas County, one in Lancaster County and one in the East Central District. Investigations are underway and ongoing in each jurisdiction.
Roscoe C. Beachler is Jefferson County’s Veteran of the Month for March. Beachler was presented with a certificate last week. He was unable to attend the ceremony at the Jefferson County Courthouse on Wednesday, March 3, but Commissioner Mark Schoenrock read Beachler’s biography before the start of the County Commissioners’ weekly meeting.
Beachler was born on the family farm to Ira and Laure Beachler.
After months of separation due to COVID-19 restrictions participants in the Fairbury TeamMates program are now being allowed to meet with their mentors in person again.
There have been concerns raised by health care and government officials about the impact the prolonged isolation resulting from the pandemic. Peggy Galloway, case coordinator for the County’s Diversion Services, warned Jefferson County Commissioners at a meeting on Tuesday, February 16, “Isolation is one of the worst things you can do for depression.”
