1891So much corn was raised, farmers had trouble finding places for it. One farmer hauled corn to Gladstone and had to haul it back because the elevator was full. B.H. Rayburn, northwest of Fairbury, had raised 10,000 bushels of corn.George H. Bailey sold 17 lots in the northwest part of Fairbury to A. Blauser for $1,200.1894Ed Waples sold his north side restaurant and bakery to J.B. Lewis of Washington, Kan. On the west side, Martin Oerter planned a two-story building to be rented to Jack Fitton.Endicott vicinity residents had rousing “literaries” each Friday evening at the Mount Vernon school south of town.1904James Hughes bought part of the 560-acre Kesterson ranch southwest of Fairbury for $25,000. John Kesterson had another section adjoining.Thomas Rayburn sold a half-section of land to Edgar Shoebotham for $15,000. O.F. Willems was erecting a store building at the Shea siding on the Burlington Railroad west of Diller. D.B. Cropsey was advertising lots in Highland Addition (east of F Street and north of 11th) from $25 to $100 each.1914The Village of Diller decided to stay with acetylene gas for lighting and rejected offers to supply.Local dealers were offering 12 to 13 cents a pound live weight for turkeys.A taxicab service in Fairbury offered to take a passenger anywhere in town for 10 cents.1921The Fairbury Journal recorded the death of Mrs. Anna Stutevoss at the age of nearly 94 years. She was at that time the oldest person in Fairbury.1924Dressed turkeys were priced at 20 to 30 cents a pound at Fairbury butcher shops.Home Savings & Loan of Fairbury offered to pay six percent on paid certificates. Working for half the established rate of 50 to 70 cents an hour for a man plus team, farmers in the Thompson vicinity co-operated with the county to cut down a steep hill so cars could negotiate the steep grade.1934Methodists of Fairbury celebrated the founding of their church 65 years earlier, with displays of pastors, choirs and church buildings, etc. The Rev. Harry F. Huntington of Crete was appointed Fairbury Methodist pastor, succeeding the recently-deceased Rev. L.F. Townsend.Jefferson County farmers voted overwhelmingly against continuation of the 1934 corn-hog producing states the vote was just reversed except Nebraska, where the proposal about broke even.The federal buying for surplus cattle had ended with 5,542 in this county, equal to about one-fifth that number shown in the annual property assessment.1944Vernon, Chester and Stanley Lea sold the Lea Bakery of Fairbury to the Smith Baking Co. of Lincoln. Boone, joined the First National Bank staff.George Junker was elected county Farmers Union president, succeeding Arnold Ruhnke. Re-elected were Paul Regnier, vice president, and Lea Fairley, secretary-treasurer. Ruhnke had recently been elected state senator from this district, and asked views of Journal readers about taxes and other probable Unicameral issues.1964Lally Associated, Inc., of Utica, N.Y., announced plans to open a plant in Fairbury after the first of the year. It made arrangements with the Fairbury Industrial Development Corporation for use of the for-mer Grainger building at the northeast corner of Third and D Streets.New officers of Vashti chapter No. 68, Order of Easter Star, were Mrs. August Hein, worthy matron, and Gail Merrill, worthy patron. 1974Winners in the Elks Club-sponsored Americanism poster contest were Kay Baumfalk, first; Rose Ma-rie Almaguer and Nancy Steele.Homes Davis and Blaine Huss were reelected to the Jefferson County ASC committee to serve along with Same Turner, Alternates-elect were Robert Freese and Gilbert Luehring.Glenn Beachler of Fairbury was elected president by the Nebraska Power Industry committee.Use began of the City of Fairbury's new landfill site, 3 miles west of 14th and E Streets, a mile north and ¼ mile east.1984The Rev. Sherry Sklenar arrived to assume duties as pastor of the Endicott and Helvey United Meth-odist churches.Pastor Jesse Hensarling assumed duties of Jansen Bible Church.A blaze destroyed the house located at the northwest corner of Fourth and I streets. The house had re-portedly been vacated days before by June Colley, who moved to Missouri.Full page adds advertised the $250,000 going-out-of-business sale for LeRoy's Jewelry. A one-carat solitaire diamond ring, regularly priced at $4,200, was on sale for $1,995.Senator Pat Morehead, District 30 state senator, speaking to the local Kiwanians and Optimists, said she would introduce legislation that would make the wearing of seat belts mandatory as a better alter-native to a federal government regulation that will require passive restraints (air bags) in all vehicles by 1990 if two-thirds of the states did not pass mandatory seat belt legislation.1994Farm Bureau members representing Jefferson County at the recent state convention in South Sioux City included Gene Thomas, Steve Ebke and David Endorf, all of Daykin, and Allen Black of Fairbury.2002Meridian Senior Jenny Jordening was selected to both the Lincoln Journal-Star and the Omaha World Herald All State volleyball teams.2004The District 8 School Board revised the tobacco policy aimed for a drug-free environment for the Fairury School system. The revision states that all tobacco products are prohibited on properties which are connected with the Fairbury Public Schools. Tobacco use before, during and after events will also be prohibited. The policy includes teachers, adults, students and patrons.
