Fairbury Fire Department personnel included Chief George Mackay and four other paid employees, Con Chancellor, Fred Becker Jr., Ward Lesher and Harold Saathoff, and these volunteers; Bob and Glen Beachier, Luther Furrow, George Furry, Irvin Junker, Fred Huss Jr., John Knobel, Gayland Lightbody, Don Minnick, Verle Price, Clinton Richardson, Francis Rice, Corwin Stauss, Corbett Summers, Frank Walker and Frank Webb. Joe E. Cook was Fairbury police chief; Lewis Hollaway, night chief; Henry Arnold, captain; O.M. Curry, Donald Cerveny and Michael Schmal, patrolmen.
1959
Norris Schoen was elected president of the Jefferson County Farmers Union, succeeding George Junker.
Nebraska Wesleyan University presented its Distinguished Citizen Award to Mrs. E.J. Hested of Fairbury. Janet Kay Durst, daughter of the Floyd Dursts, was crowned basketball queen of Morrowville Rural High School.
1979
Clearing snow from Fairbury streets had cost the City of Fairbury almost $6,000 up to February 1, reported Ed Coatman, street superintendent. Iven Riggle, Jefferson County highway coordinator, said county workers had put in 932 hours of overtime during January snow removal.
1989
Members of the Fairbury City Council voted four to three to hire an officer to fill the vacancy on the force due to the loss of Assistant Chief Clinton Shuck, who was to retire in April. Several members of the council were reluctant to hire another police officer because of the possible strain on the budget.
Thayer and Nuckolls county officers were puzzled by preferences of burglars who visited two grocery stores in Davenport and Lawrence the same night. The entire stock of cigarettes was taken in Davenport; in Lawrence, the loot included all the cigarettes, a case of lettuce and carrots.

1993
An 8-0 run early in the fourth period made the winning difference, 38-29, for the Fairbury Lady Jeffs in their season finale against Lincoln Pius X.
Jackie Bangert and Brent Lottman of Diller were selected as Teens of the Month by the Fairbury Elks Lodge No. 1203.
1999
The Fairbury Chamber of Commerce made two special presentations at their banquet. Dale Maatsch was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award and Marion Steward received the Community Service Award. Rodd Paul, Daykin, was selected to serve as the student ambassador for the auto collision repair technology program at Southeast Community College, Milford Campus.
The single biggest restoration project of a historical building in Fairbury was one step closer to completion thanks to the Nebraska Department of Roads. The state had announced that it had awarded a $300,000 grant to the Jefferson County Historical Society to complete restoration of the Rock Island Depot in Fairbury.
2003
Rep. Tom Osborne announced the House, Senate and White House negotiators agreed to better target drought assistance to producers who need it the most.
The condition of the track at Fairbury Jr. Sr. High School was bad according to district superintendent Fred Helmink. It was determined earlier this week that the track was unsafe for competition and wouldn’t be available for prep activity.
Area schools made a great showing in wrestling this year. Fairbury was be represented by five senior high wrestlers at the State Tournament; Justin Stelling, Nate Stelling, Zeb Zimmerman, Justin Warnke and Nate Prellwitz. Tri County sent five wrestlers also; Scott Kratochvil, Eric Stokebrand, Josh Malchow, Zed Adams and Brandon Weise. For the first time in two years Meridian also sent a wrestler to state, Michael Nickel.
