1882Abraham Thiessen of the Mennonite settlement at Jansen received a shipment of silkworm eggs from Japan. The worms' favorite food of mulberry leaves were in abundance here, but the worms struggled with the severe Nebraska winter temperatures.1902Moving of the Sonderegger Nursery from Jefferson County to Beatrice was said to be because of the 20-30 percent lower freight rates there. (This may have been the "Missouri River rate," which extended west through Jansen).Campbell Bros. of Fairbury were adding an elephant car to their circus-train of 20 cars.1912A $40,000 fire at Diller destroyed the opera house. Friesen had been a Mason for 79 years. Only one gold medal is given to a member in each state. Upon the death of the present medal holder it is then passed on to the next Mason who holds the same distinction.
