1923Harry D. Benson became Fairbury Farmers Union Elevator manager.1931The Wymore Community Club purchased a public address system from the Christlieb Electric Shop. It was intended to be used on Saturday nights to broadcast a band program and the men's chorus on Wednesdays.1938Highland Park in Fairbury was renamed McNish Park. The city council also voted to accept the gift from the estate of Sylvia McNish of lots in the blocks both north and south of the park. The plan was to use WPA (Works Progress Administration) labor to perform extensive landscaping and beautification. Materials would be purchased with money left to the city by McNish in her will.About four- and one-half blocks of paving were completed on West Third Street in Fairbury1942Jefferson County’s War Savings stamp and bond quota was set at $49,000.Food stamp offices were closed in Jefferson County. Those utilizing food stamps were required to switch to the "mail order" plan. The federal food stamp program had bene active in Jefferson County since May 1941.1943Motorists were urged to have auto tires recapped, with new tires in extremely short supply.Another World War II shortage was farm labor.Numerous town residents were helping here with the harvest.1953The Jefferson County Board of Equalization called for a 40-tract classification of farm land based on productivity, fertility, location and soil type. A 16-man volunteer committee was to do the report at no expense to the county.1958Farmers, churchgoers and other locals in Odell pitched in to help clean up debris after a tornado left several farm buildings destroyed.Farms hit belonged to Harley Doyle, Harold Vitosh, Frank Rickers, A.E. Anderson and Joe Bures.The American Legion building on the Bures farm was flattened.1966"God & Country" Scouting awards were presented to David and Russel Boeckner, Jim Haberman and Jim Hill of Fairbury at a dinner in Lincoln.1986City and county officials were in the process of installing one of three Civil Defense sirens. The siren was located near the high school while two more sirens, located at Ninth and B streets and at Circle Drive, were set up but not yet wired.The sirens, purchased jointly by the city and county, had audio capabilities to carry recorded message warnings.1993Heavy rains and flood waters soaked north central Kansas over the Fourth of July holiday. Washington County dispatcher Traci Hattesohl told FJN, “We have quite a few fields under water.”Movies playing at the Bonham Theatre were “Weekend at Bernies II,” and “The Last Action Hero.”
