Jefferson County Jail Inmates Relocated During Repairs

By Gordon HopkinsThis week, all the inmates being held at the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Center have been relocated to other facilities while a sewer line is replaced in the building.Jefferson County Sheriff Nicholas Georgi gave a report to Jefferson County Commissioners the morning of Tuesday, May 27, “So, we’re moving inmates out of our jail starting Thursday, and we’re going to Seward and Saline counties, we’ve made arrangements.”The sheriff said, “And then, during that time, all my jailers are working days, and we’re painting the whole jail because it hasn’t been painted in God knows how many years.”The work is expected to take approximately three weeks.The temporary housing of inmates in other counties is not expected to create a significant financial burden. Sheriff Georgi said, “I think it’s 55 bucks a day (per inmate).”Commissioner Mark Schoenrock asked, “Is that roughly what it costs us when we have them here?”Sheriff Georgi said, “Yeah, most counties are saying the daily cost is anywhere from $50 to $57.”Later that day, the sheriff gave a report to the Law Enforcement Committee. He noted the sewer line is very old and runs under jail and dispatch, “It’s costed us a lot over the last three years. We should have done it a while ago.”“Is the original line. So, it’s that old clay stuff, and it’s collapsed halfway through,” said the sheriff. “We’re having the whole line replaced, which means breaking up the floor and moving dispatch.”
