Alan Mussman

Alan Ray Mussman went home to be with the Lord on June 3, 2025, after his battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at his home with his beloved wife and daughters by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Alan lived a life grounded in love, hard work, and quiet generosity.Born on November 1, 1954, in Fairbury, Alan was the son of Cyrus Mussman and Gracie (Diekhoff) Mussman. He was baptized by his maternal grandfather, Reverend H.J. Diekhoff. He grew up on a farm near Ohiowa, Neb. and graduated from Meridian High School. He married the love of his life Kaye Thomas on August 2, 1980, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ohiowa. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and service. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters Dena and Leah. His greatest joys were being a dad and later a “Papa” to his three granddaughters: McKinley and Sophie Skiles, and Ivy Carlson.A lifelong farmer near Alexandria, Alan was a problem solver at heart—always building, fixing, or finding a better way to get things done around the farm. He had a creative and curious mind, often combining practicality with ingenuity in everything he did. Alan also had a deep appreciation for history, genealogy, reading, and traveling. He spent many hours exploring nature, kayaking, camping, horseback riding, and hunting for arrowheads and artifacts. Alan gave generously of his time and talents, especially as a 4-H volunteer alongside Kaye. They enjoyed mentoring young people, chaperoning trips to Washington, D.C., and working on countless student projects. In 2023, their dedication was recognized when they were named 4-H Volunteers of the Year.Alan and Kaye were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ohiowa for many years, and now attend Coffeehouse Ministries in Fairbury.Alan was preceded in death by his father Cyrus Mussman; his father- and mother-in-law, Melvin and Erma Thomas; his brother-in-law Paul Thomas; and his nephew Jason Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kaye Mussman; daughters Dena (Evan) Skiles and Leah (Tyler) Carlson; granddaughters McKinley, Sophie, and Ivy; mother Gracie Mussman; sister Brenda (Steve) George; sister-in-law Luann Matthies; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.Alan will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, humor, and the quiet strength with which he loved his family and served his community. A Celebration of Alan’s Life was held on Friday, June 6, at the Ohiowa Auditorium in Ohiowa, Nebraska with Jeff Porter presiding.Pianist, Peg Friesen, accompanied soloist, Ed Friesen, singing two songs, “As The Deer” and “Above All Power”. Pianist, Peg Friesen, then accompanied the congregational as they sang, “It Is Well”. As the family departed the Ohiowa Auditorium there was a special music selection played, “Leaning On The Everlasting Arms” by Iris DeMent.Pallbearers were Curtis Thomas, Garrett Gibson, Brad Diekhoff, Nathan George, Ryan George and Jon Halama. Honorary Pallbearers included Gary Diekhoff, Andrew George and Chet Henry.Graveside Services were conducted following the Funeral Service in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery in Ohiowa. Memorial contributions were made to the family to be donated to Alan’s favorite charities.Farmer & Son Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements and services.
