A Fair Assessment

It is a little like being an armchair quarterback. Every year, I hear the good and the bad about the county fair. Not just Jefferson County, but every county fair in the area, eventually, someone will mention what they liked and didn’t like, quite often comparing one county fair to another. This year the weather was great for Friday and Saturday. I heard a lot of positive comments about that, but the county fair board can’t control the weather. I will say there was a huge range of activities that cut a wide swath across demographics. From a local rock band like, ‘Monsters at Bay’ to a band for the little tikes, ‘The String Beans,’ there was definitely something for the music lovers out there.There were some consternation about food variety at the fair, but that is every year. Not enough deep fried things, too many deep fried things, cost of meals too much. It is a debate that has been going on in the county fair world for eons. The carnival was a nice place for the teen crowd to go hang out. Now, I heard teens say there weren’t a lot of rides for their age group, more for younger kids, but expanding the carnival would require more money by the county and budgets are tight. It is really hard to get a carnival to begin with, and with an expanded carnival, it might be an all-or-nothing proposition. You either get 50 rides or 10, it is not an ala carte situation. A teen dance is a possibility to keep that demographic interested in going to the fairgrounds, but I think this is something tried every so often at county fairs and local celebrations and just sort of dies out when the teens helping organize it graduate. Parking is always a problem no matter where you go for any celebration. I do appreciate that both parking lots are directly across from the fairgrounds and the walk isn’t like the state fair.All in all, another year, another plus and minus on the report card.
