Argument Over Parking Leads to Multiple Felonies

What began as an argument over a parked car eventually led to allegations of threats with a firearm, an arrest and multiple felony charges.Matthew S. Turvey, age 28, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, with his attorney, Gregory Kratz. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Turvey is facing seven charges. The most serious is use of a firearm to commit a felony, a class 1C felony punishable by five to 50 years in prison. He is also charged with three counts of terroristic threats and one count of assault of a peace officer, all class 3A felonies punishable by up to three years in prison, 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine.In addition, Turvey is charged with obstructing a peace officer, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one years in jail and a $1,000 fine, and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction that carries a $100 fine. According to the arrest affidavit, on August 22nd, at approximately 6:43 p.m., Jefferson County Communications received a 911 call from a Fairbury resident claiming that an individual was threatening people with an automatic rifle.Deputies arrived at the scene and a man later identified as Turvey reportedly exited a nearby residence. The deputy that filled out the affidavit wrote, “I questioned Turvey about the rifle, which he denied having. Turvey walked back into the residence, stating that I was not permitted to enter. I informed Turvey that he was being detained and placed my hand around his wrist. Turvey pulled away, again stating that I was not permitted inside the house. A brief struggle ensued, where Turvey was assisted to the ground. During the struggle, Turvey attempted to prevent me from placing him in handcuffs.”The affidavit reported “Turvey began making spontaneous statements without being questioned” about asking neighbors to move a car that was parked in the street, “Turvey says he went back into the house, retrieved his shotgun, and sat on the front porch. Turvey denied pointing the gun at anyone and had no intention of hurting anyone.” Per the affidavit, Turvey said, "I just did not want him to come onto my property.”According to witnesses interviewed by deputies, “Dude came out pointing a gun at us, threatening us, telling us to (expletive) move it.”The firearm was seized by deputies. The affidavit reported “there was no shell in the shotgun's firing chamber” but noted “the shotgun magazine was loaded with five shells.”Another hearing is scheduled for November 12. The defendant remains free on a $25,000 (10 percent) bond.
