Open House Planned for Highway US-136 Improvements

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be hosting a public information open house meeting to share proposed improvements to US-136/14th Street in Fairbury. The public meeting will be held at the Fairbury Community Building (601 City Park Road) on Thursday, December 4 from 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. The project would repair approximately 0.4 miles of concrete pavement along US-136 starting just west of the viaduct over the Union Pacific Railroad and extending east to just beyond the intersection of US-136 and Tilden Street. It would also reconstruct approximately 1.2 miles of US-136 as a three-lane roadway starting just east of Tilden Street, to just west of L Street. The three-lane section would consist of a center two-way left-turn lane and an eastbound and westbound through lane. No work would be done on the railroad viaduct. Construction is dependent on receiving Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS). If CDS is received, construction could begin as early as spring of 2027 with completion anticipated by winter of 2027.The proposed project would be built under traffic, with no highway detour. Phasing requirements would temporarily impact access to local intersections and driveways. Local traffic would be able to cross the highway at intersection locations not under construction. Additional details will be available online and at the information open house. There will be no formal presentation at the public meeting, so participants can come and go at any time during the two-hour meeting window.Those unable to attend can find meeting materials on the NDOT website at ndot.info/13476 at the time of the meeting. Feedback and comments on the project can be submitted through December 19, 2025.In advance of the public meeting, NDOT will also hold two stakeholder meetings: Official Stakeholders, including sheriff, EMS, fire, school superintendent, chamber. utilities and select Fairbury city staff and elected officials (so as not to have a quorum). Businesses and residents with potential property impacts due to the proposed project - Property impacts could include consolidation of driveways, acquisition of right-of-way or temporary easements.Invited stakeholders will receive a postcard in the mail. Postcard invitations will also be mailed to businesses and residents along the project corridor for the public information meeting. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the public meeting.
