Logan Evans Returns to Prison: Previously Convicted for Role in Crystal Springs Homicide

One of the five individuals involved in the 2019 Crystal Springs homicide is heading back to prison after pleading guilty to weapon and drug charges.Logan Evans, age 25, was sentenced in Gage County District Court for two cases on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Rick A. Schreiner was the presiding judge. Weapon PossessionIn one case, Evans was arrested Sunday, July 14, 2024, by the Beatrice Police Department (BPD) for possessing a deadly weapon. Due to prior felony convictions, Evans is prohibited from owning a firearm. Possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person is a class 1D felony in Nebraska, punishable by up to 50 years in prison.According to BPD, a family member came to the police department, claiming to have a firearm belonging to Evans. The weapon, a Polymer80 PFC9 9mm pistol, was turned over to authorities. An officer interviewed the family member, who indicated Evans occasionally stays in the basement of the family residence. According to the Affidavit for Warrantless Arrest, the witness, “stated he went into the bathroom and observed the firearm on the bathroom sink counter and brought it into the police department.”The officer also interviewed two other witnesses. Evans was arrested that day by BPD.In accordance with a plea agreement, Evans pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person, a class 3 felony punishable by up to four years in prison, two years of post-release supervision and a $25,000 fine. Drug ChargesOn August 4, 2024, at approximately 5:23 a.m., the Beatrice Police Department responded to a report of a 911 hangup call. Officers located the reporting party who, according to the arrest affidavit, indicated Logan Evans was sleeping in a recreational vehicle (RV) that was “parked partially on a driveway and partially in the roadway,” and also that there was methamphetamine in the vehicle.The police sergeant that filled out the affidavit reported making contact with Evans, “I asked Logan for consent to search the vehicle. Logan stated he did not care if I searched but he could not give permission as the RV did not belong to him. I was unable to contact the owner.” According to the sergeant, a K-9 drug sniff was conducted, giving probable cause to search the vehicle, “Officers located nine glass smoking devices, four of which contained a burned white crystalline residue, I recognized through my training and experience to be methamphetamine. Officers located two digital scales, numerous syringes, butane torches, two containers with suspected methamphetamine residue, and three individual baggies containing 16 grams of green leafy substance consistent with marijuana. One of the containers with white crystalline residue field tested presumptively positive as methamphetamine. One of the glass smoking devices with burned crystalline residue was inside of a protective case. On the case, in big letters, was the name 'LOGAN.'” Evans was arrested at the scene and was later released on a $7,500 (10 percent) bond. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He was also charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, both infractions.On October 27, 2024, the court received a letter from Evans, postmarked from the Department of Corrections in Omaha. “Personally, prison/jail is not the place for anyone. Especially me,” Evans wrote. “This time in here has shown me it's time for a dramatic change in my life.”In accordance with a plea agreement, Evans pleaded no contest to attempt of a felony, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year incarceration and a $1,000 fine. The infractions were dismissed. SentenceJudge Schreiner sentenced Evans to five years in prison, four years for the weapon charge and one year for the drug charge. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning one after the other.Criminal HistoryEvans has a prior criminal history. Most notable was his involvement in the Crystal Springs homicide. Evans was one of five suspects charged in the death of Marc C. Jarrell of Lincoln. Jarrell was killed on July 1, 2019, at Crystal Springs Park in Fairbury. However, his body had been moved and was not discovered until July 4. Again, Evans was originally charged with possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person. In accordance with a plea agreement, Evans pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of attempt of a class 2A felony, which is a class 3A felony, punishable by three years of incarceration, followed by nine to 18 months of post-release supervision, and a $10,000 fine. Evans served three years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections and was released on November 27, 2023. More recently, on March 12, 2025, he was sentenced in Douglas County District Court to a maximum of four years in prison for possession of methamphetamine (10 to 27 grams), a class 1D felony.
