1969A Topeka, Kansas, youth was sentenced to 15 years in prison for a knife attack on a group of Fairbury Junior College students in a restaurant parking lot.The new dormitory of the junior college was to be called Scott Hall, honoring the late Walter Scott, longtime Fairbury schools superintendent and first president of the college.Jefferson County Commissioners set salaries for elected county officials: clerk, treasurer, assessor and attorney, $6,750; sheriff and district court clerk, $6,500; and commissioners and part-time superintendent of schools, $3,000.1979There were 620 workers registered for full-time employment in Jefferson-Thayer-Gage counties area, an increase of eight percent. Demand had dropped by 27 percent at Beatrice, increased by 10 percent at Fairbury. Bud & Bill's Ready-Mix of Steele City celebrated its 25th anniversary. Modern Furniture, owned by Stan and Eleanor Lea, closed. It had been the successor of Freeman's Furniture Store, on the west side of the square.1989In a lengthy discussion, members of the Fairbury City Council discussed a proposed one percent sales tax; Joe Jelinek, chairman of the finance committee said approximately $314,000 would be raised by using the tax.Alumni and friends of the former Plymouth Public Schools had reached the halfway mark in their fund-raising efforts for a monument to be erected on the site of the former Plymouth School building located on the west edge of Plymouth, along Highway 4.One of the biggest high-lights in the area sports scene in 1989 was the Lady Jeffs championship performance at the Class B State track meet.1999The Fairbury City Council authorized a payment of $625 per month for three years to allow the Top Grade telemarketing firm to relocated to another site in Fairbury. The move was funded with LB840 funds.2002The Fairbury City Council tabled the fire chief situation. The council members stated that at this time said they were unsure as to whether Fairbury required or could afford a full time fire chief. At that time, Fairbury Chief of Police, Rick Carmichael, served as part-time Fire Chief. The last full time fire chief in Fairbury was in 1996.The Beatrice Swim Teams brought in its highest finish ever at the eight team Columbus Invite by placing second overall in both men's and women's division. Fairbury students who were placing members of that team were Danielle McCown, Sara Siebe, Sheena Schultz, and Devon Gay.
