Holding The Line

There is a trickle down of the economy that reaches places like Fairbury after it happens elsewhere.As prices surged on some items, it was a bit slower to be reflected here. However, the pendulum swings both ways and after prices went back down on those same items, the price hike lingered here.From milk to eggs to tires to gasoline, there have been price hikes in items over the decades and then a settling point.I remember in college putting gas in my vehicle and it was 88 cents a gallon. I thought, ‘If it goes to $1 a gallon, people will stop driving.’ Well, that hasn’t happened. The price is still well above $1 a gallon but below the highest points in recent years.This ebb and flow of the economy can have lasting effects here and adjustments are made by consumers. Does a dollar stretch as much as it used to? No, but if I were to ask my parents, they’d say the same thing, so in a sense, it is all relative.My father grew up during some rough times in this country and seeing the country go through changes in the 50s and 70s, post war eras, hearing about the prices of things fluctuating, was fascinating when I was a kid. Businesses adjust to face pricing changes, no exceptions here. We are adjusting slightly the pricing of everything and will continue to do so in the coming months. Our biggest swing in pricing is the price of paper and postage. With those, we are at the mercy of the USPS and the newsprint industry, where Canada is a big player.Price increases in postage is done annually and we watch and monitor this as an industry, with those prices affecting all of us, universally, across state lines. Newsprint is still a big thing to readers, many want to hold the paper, get the ink on their fingers. It is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years with newspapers. We adjust where we can due to the ups and downs of the market almost daily, therefore the cover price of the paper does not change weekly, we simply make further adjustments in other areas of the business to even things out.We will continue to try to hold the line and adjust.
