Election Filing Begins

By Gordon HopkinsMonday, January 5, was the first day for candidates to file for the 2026 midterm elections in Nebraska. Incumbents have until February 17, to file and non-incumbents until March 2.Among the local offices up for election are: Assessor, Attorney, County Clerk, Clerk of the District Court, Commissioner District 1, Commissioner District 3, Sheriff, Treasurer, School Boards, City of Fairbury council members, Airport Authority and Village board members. Members of the Nebraska Legislature that serve even numbered districts are also up for election. There are 24 of the 49 seats up in 2026. Among those are:• District 2: Robert Clements is term-limited.• District 6: Machaela Cavanaugh is term-limited.• District 8: Megan Hunt is term-limited.• District 10: Wendy DeBoer is term-limited.• District 14: John Arch is term-limited.• District 16: Ben Hansen is term-limited.• District 18: Christy Armendariz is retiring.• District 22: Mike Moser is term-limited.• District 28: Jane Raybould is retiring.• District 30: Myron Dorn is term-limited.• District 32: Tom Brandt is term-limited.• District 38: Dave Murman is term-limited. Both Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock and Crete Attorney Shaylene Smith are vying for Senator Brandt’s open seat.Nebraska Govern Jim Pillen is also up for reelection. President Donald Trump has endorsed Pillen. In the previous election, Trump endorsed Charles Herbster against Pillen. Herbster has not yet announced if he intends to challenge Pillen again, although he has indicated that he is considering it.Three of Nebraska’s national delegate seats are up. One of those is the seat currently occupied by Republican U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts. Independent Dan Osborn has announced his intention to run against Ricketts. Osborn previously ran against Senator Deb Fischer in the last election cycle and was defeated by a single-digit margin.Mike Flood U.S. Representative is up for reelection. Democrat Eric Moyer, a renewable energy advocate, launched his campaign to unseat Flood in August of 2025.The other seat up for grabs is that of U.S. Representative Don Bacon, who has announced he does not intend to seek reelection.
