Impacts of Tyson Foods Plant Closure Will Be Felt Throughout Nebraska

The impacts of the closure of the Tyson Foods beef processing facility in Lexington, Nebraska, will have economic impacts well beyond Lexington and the 3,200 individuals once employed at the plant. That is according to a recently released report from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) that analyzed the state-wide impact.On Friday, November 21, 2025, Tyson Foods announced it would permanently close the facility effective January 20, 2026. The company also indicated it would convert its Amarillo, Texas facility to a single full-capacity shift. The Lexington plant capacity was nearly 5,000 cattle per day, approximately 4.8 percent of the total daily beef slaughter in the U.S., per UNL.UNL reported, “The estimated annual statewide economic impact of the Tyson plant closure is $3.283 billion dollars, including both direct and multiplier effects on the Nebraska economy. Total labor income losses are projected to be $530.431 million dollars per year across 7,003 jobs, which comprise the 3,212 positions directly eliminated at the plant and additional jobs that support those workers in other sectors. Although these figures represent statewide annual impacts, the direct and multiplier losses are expected to be concentrated in Dawson County and neighboring communities from which plant employees commute.” The plant closure is also expected to substantially reduce tax revenues. This comes at a time when the state is facing a significant budget shortfall. The UNL report estimates annual losses in state personal income tax revenue at approximately $23.20 million and state sales tax revenues are projected to decline by $10.16 million per year. As for job losses, more than just the 3,200 workers employed by Tyson. Including those who work in other industries that supported Tyson operations, the analysis projects more than 7,000 jobs lost statewide.Meanwhile, there is the question about what will happen to the Lexington facility. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen recently responded to rumors that the facility will be demolished. Pillen anticipates it will instead be reproposed, “Number one, they (Tyson) brought engineers in, and they are assessing the plant, and they’ve said that they will have an answer by the first part of March, whether that plant will be made into a case-ready meat plant, to create value added from products that are produced in other plants within Tyson, whether it’s in Nebraska or other parts of the country.” The analysis was conducted by Eric Thompson, UNL economics professor, and Elliott Dennis, UNL associate professor livestock marketing and risk management.
