Candidates File For State School Board District 5

Two candidates have filed to take the State School Board seat, District 5, currently occupied by Kirk Penner.District 5 includes Butler, Clay, Fillmore, Franklin, Gage, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lancaster (south of Nebraska Parkway in Lincoln and rural areas of the county), Nuckolls, Pawnee, Polk, Richardson, Saline, Saunders, Seward, Thayer, Webster and York counties. Michaela Conway announced Monday, January 19, that she is running for the Nebraska State Board of Education, District 5Conway serves on the local school board for Crete Public Schools and is a graduate of Nebraska public schools. She comes from a family of educators and is the parent of five children currently enrolled in public schools. “I am running to put students, families and educators at the center of every decision,” Conway said. “Strong literacy, support for teachers and honest, accountable governance are essential to preparing students for the future.” Conway said her campaign will prioritize improving academic outcomes, strengthening teacher recruitment and retention and ensuring that education policy is guided by data rather than ideology.Also running is Angie Eberspacher, who announced her candidacy in June of 2025. She is a former member of Educational Service Unit 6 and a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with dual degrees in elementary education and early childhood education. “Since announcing my campaign in June 2025, I’ve enjoyed meeting and listening to parents, voters, and community members from all across the district,” said after filing on January 13, 2026. “I’m committed to being a strong advocate for parents and students, prioritizing the 4 R’s: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Responsibility.”Non-incumbent candidates have until March 2 of this year to file.
