Anointing Jesus

The Scriptures, particularly the four Gospels, give us a glimpse of the time when was Jesus was anointed by a woman. Now that is one common thread in each of the stories. There is another common thread that the anointing took place in Bethany. The third common thread is an expensive perfume that was used that was particularly expensive. And the next common thread was the indignation that this perfume was not sold and the money given to the poor. In each instance the woman brought the perfume in an Alabaster jar.Now in two of the stories, the place where this anointing took place was in the home of Simon the Leper. In Luke’s account, the place is the home of one of the Pharisees. Jesus had gone there at the invitation of the Pharisee. In Matthew and Mark’s account we are told that Jesus is reclining at the table and the woman pours the perfume on His head. Luke described the woman in a little more detail. He explained that she was a woman who had lived a sinful life. He also gives a little more detail of the anointing. “She stood behind Jesus at His feet weeping, and she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured the perfume on them.This gave rise to the Pharisee to doubt Jesus, and he said “If this man were a prophet, then would He have known who is touching Him and what kind of woman she is-- that she is a sinner.” Of course this opened the door for Jesus to share a parable and show the Pharisee that He knew about the woman, and that she was a sinner. He told about men who owed an amount money to an individual, one great amount and one a less amount. Then Jesus showed the forgiveness shown to each man. The He asked who would love the man who forgave the most. The Pharisee said the one who was forgiven the most. Jesus pointed out the that woman was forgiven her sins and thus she was showing her love, and adoration for the Lord who forgave her. And Jesus pointed out all the things the Pharisee did not do for Jesus when He came into his house.John does not give much of an account of the event. He makes a reference of this being Lazarus’s sister Mary who poured the perfume on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. The Scriptures do not give us any further identification of the woman who anointed Jesus in Bethany.Now you can read all the Gospel accounts and decide for yourself. They are Matthew 26:6-7; Mark 14:3; Luke 7:37-36-39; and John 11:2. Now you can anoint Jesus in your own prayer closet with you own tears and probably use a towel to wipe them.God bless.Rev.
