President Trump and Nebraska Delegates at Odds Over Argentine Beef Imports

By Gordon Hopkins On Friday, February 6, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order permitting an increase of Argentine beef imports into U.S. grocery stores. The move is receiving criticism from Trump supporters in Nebraska. President Trump issued a statement that same day. “As President of the United States, I have a responsibility to ensure that hard-working Americans can afford to feed themselves and their families. After considering the information provided to me by the Secretary of Agriculture, among other relevant information, I am taking action to temporarily increase the quantity of in-quota imports of lean beef trimmings under the United States beef TRQ to increase the supply of ground beef for United States consumers.”The new deal will increase the allowable imports to 80,000 metrics tons of beef, quadrupling the previous quota.While the states intention is to reduce beef costs to consumers, not everyone believes this is how to go about it. Among those who have expressed opposition to this proposal is U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, who is not only one of Nebraska’s federal delegates but a cattle rancher as well. She issued a statement in response to the announcement, “Nebraska produces the world's best beef. Instead of imports that sideline American ranchers, we should be focused on solutions that cut red tape, lower production costs, and support growing our cattle herd.” Those sentiments were echoed by U.S. Representative Adrian Smith, “No matter the conditions, ranchers in Nebraska's Third District lead the nation in producing high-quality, affordable beef. Now more than ever, we must deliver policies which drive confidence in the market, eliminate burdensome regulations, and lower production costs. While the United States holds historic low-inventory in cattle herds, we must focus on policies that strengthen the market and create long-term certainty for the entire supply chain.”In addition, the Nebraska Cattlemen released the following statement, “Nebraska Cattlemen stands firm in the belief that expanding the U.S. beef cattle herd and lowering input costs is the solution to elevated beef prices, not foreign beef imports. The federal government should focus on removing overregulation at all levels of cattle and beef production and expanding the availability of risk management options available to producers to aid in the multi-year process of rebuilding U.S. beef cattle inventories.” Elliott Dennis, an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, noted that an estimated one percent of the beef Americans consume will come from Argentina, so he anticipates little to no impact on prices.
