State Receiving Over $7 Million In Grants For Waste Reduction

The Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment recently announced the award of over $7 million in grants to support 126 waste and litter reduction projects across the state, including several local initiatives in the southeast Nebraska region.These funds are awarded through DWEE’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program and its Litter Reduction and Recycling Program. The grants will help fund waste and litter reduction projects, recycling programs, pay costs for scrap tire cleanups and collections for household hazardous waste, electronic waste, and pharmaceuticals. Funding is also provided to support public education programs on litter reduction and recycling through a variety of school and community activities. Cleanup grants provide funding for Nebraska residents of all ages who pick up litter and debris along Nebraska’s highways, waterways, recreation lands, urban areas, and other public use areas within the state. The Village of Diller, City of Fairbury and the City of Deshler will receive partial reimbursement for the purchase of tire-derived Products. Diller will receive $9,198 to cover 25 percent reimbursement for a rubber playground surface and Fairbury will receive $1,347 for 25 percent of the cost of rubber benches. Deshler will receive $9,100 to cover 50 percent reimbursement for rubber mulch.In addition, the City of Wilber will receive $34,470 for the collection of approximately 250 tons of scrap tires. Keep Beatrice Beautiful (KBB), non-profit organization dedicated to beautifying the community, receive two grants. One grant for $15,155 will be used for the cleanup of 150 miles roadside and 125 acres of land. The second grant is for $107,959 to be used for public education. According to the announcement, KBB said, “Through information and education, we hope to teach people how to properly recycle, to reuse, or repurpose and reduce waste and litter.”The City of Beatrice also received a third grant of $58,264 for the collection of 400 tons of scrap tires.“DWEE is pleased to support local initiatives such as those that help residents properly dispose of various household materials,” said DWEE Planning and Aid Division Administrator Sarah Starostka.
