Is The Casey’s In Fairbury Moving?

By Gordon HopkinsPlans are afoot to relocate the Casey’s General Store from its present location at 622 E Street in Fairbury to a site near the intersection of 14th/Highway 136 Street and K Street/Highway 15. However, Fairbury Development Services Director Laura Bedlan emphasized planning is still in the early stages and is by no means a “done deal.” The location being considered for the new site is directly south of the building on the south east corner of Highway 136 and Highway 15. The matter was discussed at a meeting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, when the Fairbury City Council was asked to approve plat after it was previously reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Committee. Bedlan said, “This one also involves review at the State level for Highway 15, specifically a turning lane at that location. But they (Planning and Zoning) also reviewed sidewalk requirements at that location. It is up to the City to decide whether or not they require side lot sidewalks.”Jeff Laubach of SPV Engineering, the civil engineer representing Casey’s Retail Company for the project, was on hand to answer engineering questions. However, many of the concerns of the council did not involve engineering. Councilperson Phil Rogge asked, if the new store opened, “What happens to the one downtown?”Laubach said the plan was to close to downtown location but had received some feedback from the City about the lack of eating options in that area, “So. I think they’re looking at that.Rogge said, “I can understand if you want to close it, I mean, you don’t need to do stores, but I do wish you would look at, we have so few of places to eat, restaurants downtown. I would hate to lose that, or have that be one of the restrictions.”Despite the concerns, the city council approved the plat. After the meeting, Bedlan said the City was in discussions with Casey’s headquarters about the possibility of keeping the downtown location open in form. She also pointed out that no building permits have yet been filed with the city.
