Again

By Gordon Hopkins We are at war again.None of the words in that sentence makes me happy. Especially the last one. I came into this world at a time of war. The Vietnam conflagration was in full swing when I was born. I knew nothing about it at the time, of course. Like all babies, I was focused on learning the skills babies need for survival, like looking cute and crying for mommy. It was thirty years and some change later when we went to war in Iraq. I was living in San Francisco, ironically the the hub of the Vietnam-era antiwar movement. It was another war, but this time I thought I understood it. Like all young men, I knew everything. So, naturally, I knew all the whys and wherefores about Iraq and why we went to war. Or so I thought. In some ways, I was every bit as innocent and clueless about the Iraq war as I was about the Vietnam War. It took a few years before I realized just how wrong I was, and just how wrong everyone else had been. Only now, with my nose pressed up against the window of 60, have I gained enough wisdom to realize I don’t really know anything. I don’t know what is happening. I don’t know what will happen next. Most of all, I don’t know why.All I know for sure is, we are at war. Again.
