FPS School Board Rejects Bids To Repair Roof

By Gordon Hopkins
The Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education voted to reject all the bids received for repairs on the roof of the 47 Building because none met the board’s expectations.
The roof of the 47 Building, which belongs to Fairbury Public Schools, is leaking and has been for some time.

The Building and Grounds Committee met and received the bids for the building roof project. They also met with Maurice Anderson, Property Field Adjuster with ALICAP (Area Liability Insurance for Community Schools), who recommended tearing off the roof over the gym and stage to provide a better roof.
The committee recommended rejecting all the bids.

At a meeting of the Fairbury Board of Education on Monday, March 9, board member Dr. Jonathan Winter, who also serves on the Building and Grounds Committee, explained the reason for the recommendation,

“We received some bids for the roof and, going over the bids and really digging into it a little bit more, we came to realize that the bids were only for tearing off the stage and locker room part and then just putting a membrane over the rest.”
“We are shopping around for architect firms because the state of Nebraska has deemed that we need to do that. So, we will do that, and then basically it’s a complete overhaul. The committee felt that, if we’re going to do this,” said Winter. “Let’s make a solid road that’s going to last for years and years.”

Winter said he believed the roof could be replaced within the budget as previously set forth.
The board voted unanimously to reject all the bids.
