Accident and Fire Keep Emergency Crews on the Run

The people responsible for keeping Jefferson County citizens safe had a busy afternoon yesterday.Shortly after 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 31, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Fairbury Rural Fire and Ambulance District #33 were all dispatched to the scene of a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 15, north of Fairbury.The vehicle rolled across a wide ditch and into a field, losing a fender in the process. One individual had to be extricated from the vehicle, as carried via stretcher to a waiting ambulance and was transported to the hospital. The vehicle was totaled and had to be towed away.No further details were available as of press time.As crews were finishing up at the scene, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a call came in regarding a fire at 575 Avenue and 710 Road, near the northeast corner of Rock Creek Station State Historical Park.The day before, Jefferson and Saline County Emergency Management issued yet another high to very high fire danger alert. This was just the latest in a series of fires in the last few weeks resulting from dry conditions and high winds.Flames and smoke were not the only dangers. Spooked by the fire, several deer leaped across 710 Road in front of oncoming traffic.Fairbury Fire Chief indicated the fire was accidental, possibly caused by a lawn mower.Despite the dry conditions, prescribed burning is sill being allowed.“They should be somewhat manageable as things green up and we're getting a little moisture here,” said Krause. “They are important for farmers and ranchers to get their pastures and CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) management done. So we're trying to allow as many as we can.”
