Area Baseball Action Reaches Fever Pitch

As the temperatures continue to rise, so does the level of competition for area Legion baseball teams.The Fairbury Landsharks faced Sutton on June 11 and started off solid, gaining a 2-0 lead with crucial hitting and savvy base running. However, a 6-1 second inning put Sutton up 6-3. Sutton tacked on four in the third inning to go up 10-3. The Landsharks started the comeback with a 301 fourth inning to cut the lead to 11-6 in favor of Sutton. Both squads were scoreless in the fifth and Sutton tacked on three runs in the sixth to win 14-6.CJ Goeking led the Landsharks with two hits. Jamison Runge had a double with two RBI for Fairbury. Also picking up hits were Grady Chappell (1 RBI) and Dom Joe (1 RBI). Miles Tatro had one RBI for Fairbury. Runge and Goeking each had a stolen base.Dakotah Neumiller pitched three strikeouts for the Landsharks.On June 13, the Landsharks headed to Tecumseh and lost 0-1 in a tight contest. Tecumseh scored one run in the first inning and both squads held on defense the rest of the game. Goeking and Garrett Roelfs each had a hit for Fairbury.Dom Joe had five K’s on the mound for Fairbury.Saturday (June 14) proved to a great day for the Landsharks as they defeated Palmyra 9-4.The Landsharks came out furious, scoring five runs in the first and held a 6-1 lead after two innings. Up 6-3 after four innings, the Landsharks scored three runs in the fifth to pad the lead and cruised to win the game.Dom Joe was getting it done on the mound and at the plate for the Landsharks, with two hits and three RBI. Roelfs had one hit and two RBI as did Lucas Livingston.Pitching for Fairbury, Miles Tatro had two strikeouts.The Landsharks had a gutsy win on Sunday, June 15 against Tri County, winning 11-9.Fairbury was up 3-2 after one inning then found themselves down 6-3 to Tri County in the third inning. At the end of four innings, Tri County was up 8-4. However, Fairbury scored three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to tie the game at 8-all. A 3-1 eighth inning proved the tipping point for the Landsharks to get the win. Tri County had 15 hits, Fairbury 11.Dakotah Neumiller had two hits and a team leading four RBI for Fairbury. Jamison Runge had two hits, one RBI as did Dakota Zimmerman. Neumiller had two doubles in the contest and two stolen bases.CJ Goeking had six strikeouts on the mound for Fairbury.For Tri County, Cole Spahr had four K’s and Tayden Gronemeyer had three strikeouts pitching.As for hitting for Tri Couty Jayton Jones had a home run and Cooper Stokebrand a double. Stokebrand had three hits on the day, Maddox Haake two hits, two RBI and James had three RBI. Pierce Damrow had two hits, one RBI, Tayden Gronemeyer two hits, Henry Kapke two hits, one RBI, Alex Paxton had two hits.On June 10, the Hebron Senior Legion squad had their bats matching the scorching temperatures with seven hits against Post 171 (Milford), winning 12-3.Hebron wasted no time on offense with a 4-0 opening inning and padded the lead nicely with a 6-0 second inning. Up 10-1, Hebron added two runs in the fourth before Post 171 added their final two runs.Kyler Boyles was an offensive leader for Hebron, gaining two hits and three RBI. Aden Morris also had two hits. Dayne Clark had one hit and two RBI while Dominic Page had one hit and one RBI. Picking up two RBI each was Tregan LeFave and Kamden Boyles.Landyn Tuma kept Milford quiet on the mound with six strikeouts.Hebron faced the Smith County Blue Raiders on June 14 and dropped a very close game 4-5. Smith County was up 1-0 after one inning but Hebron stormed back to go up 3-1 after the second inning. The Blue Raiders tied the game at 4-all in the fourth inning and slipped by Hebron with a run scored in the sixth. Hebron out-hit Smith County 5-4.Brayden Gausman had two hits for Hebron and Landyn Tuma and Kohen Gausman each had one hit and one RBI. Aden Morris had two strikeouts for Hebron on the mound.On June 14, Hebron came away with a solid win over Post 171 (Milford) 9-4. Down 4-3 after three innings, Hebron scored six runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.Brayden Gausman, Dylan Williams and Morris each had two hits for Hebron. Brady Degenhardt had one hit, three RBI and Carson McLaughlin had one hit and two RBI.Kamden Boyls racked up eight strikeouts for Hebron on the mound.The Tri County Seniors lost a slugfest against Syracuse on June 11, with the final 12-14.Syracuse was up 4-2 after one inning and 8-6 after two innings. Tri County outscored Syracuse 2-0 in the fourth to cut the lead to 11-9. A 3-1 fifth provided a pad for Syracuse and Tri County had the rally caps on, scoring two runs in the seventh, but could not make the run complete. Tri County had an 11-10 hit advantage over Syracuse.Drew Siems had a double and had three hits in the game with one RBI. Pierce Damrow had three hits and one RBI for Tri County while Cooper Stokebrand had two hits, one RBI. Zac Strein, Tayden Gronemeyer and Maddox Haake each had one hit for Tri County.The Syracuse defense was lacking, allowing 11 stolen bases in the game. Gronemeyer, Stokebrand, Haake and Siems each had two while Damrow had three stolen bases for Tri County.Alex Paxton and Cade Spahr each had two strikeouts for Tri County. The Wymore Diller Odell Senior Legion team (WDO) dropped a game to Post 171 (Milford) on Thursday, June 12, 2-14.WDO was up 2-1 after one inning but the offensive gates opened for Milford and they score 13 runs over the course of the game.Leading hits for WDO was Braydin Wendland with three hits, including a double, and one RBI.Wendland and Noah Troxel each had two strikeouts on the mound for WDO.Facing Tri County on June 13, WDO dropped the contest 6-15.WDO went up 4-0 in the first inning but Tri County cut it to 4-2 after the second inning. Both squads kept pace with each other and after three innings it was 6-3 in favor of WDO.Going into the fifth inning WDO held a 6-4 lead, then the fifth inning happened. Tri County scored 11 unanswered runs to blast forward for the win. Tri County held a 9-6 advantage in hitting. WDO had seven errors to Tri County’s three in the game.Tayden Gronemeyer and Cooper Stokebrand each had two hits and two RBI for Tri County. Jayton Jones had one hit and two RBI. Stokebrand had a double in the contest.Groneyemer and Alex Paxton had two and three strikeouts, respectively, for Tri County.Hunter Pollman led WDO on offense with two hits and three RBI. Cooper Morgan had one hit and one RBI. Jacob Ward stole two bases for WDO.Dave Parde brought the heat with four strikeouts on the mound for WDO while Morgan had two in relief.Earlier in the week, on June 11, Tri County would drop an offense-heavy game to Syracuse 12-14. Drew Siems would have three hits, one RBI as did Pierce Damrow. Stokebrand ended with two hits, one RBI. Siems had a double in the contest. Damrow had three stolen bases while Tayden Gronemeyer, Stokebrand, Maddox Haake and Drew Siems each had two.Alex Paxton and Cade Spahr had two strikeouts in the game.Wilber lost to Clifton-Clyde American Legion 4-5 on June 14. Both squads were scoreless in the first two innings and Wilber went up 2-1 after the third. It was 3-all after the fourth inning and Wilber went up 4-3 in the sixth. However, a 2-0 run in the seventh edged Clifton-Clyde into the ‘W’ column.Cash Kesslar had one hit, two RBI, Aven Smith one hit, one RBI. Owen Smith had two hits, one RBI as did Karsen Fisher. Owen Smith and Kesslar each had a double in the contest. Karson Inderlied, Aven Smith and Kesslar each had three stolen bases.On the mound for Wilber, Own Smith had 11 strikeouts alone in the game while two pitchers for Clifton- Clyde combined for nine K’s.To finish the triangular, Wilber downed BDS 12-10. It was a slugfest from the start with Wilber up 4-3 after one inning and 7-4 after the second inning. BDS went up 8-7 after the third and 10-7 going into the fifth. A 3-0 fifth and 2-0 sixth put the Wilber squad up for good.Kesslar had one hit, two RBI. Aven Smith had two hits. Fisher had two hits, three RBI. Chase Tachovsky had one hit, two RBI. Aven Smith came away with three stolen bases for Wilber. Collin Kohout ended the game with three strikeouts and Allen Roger had two for Wilber.
