Titans Struggle On OffenseIf not for a bad second quarter, the score may have swung the way of the Thayer Central Titan boys basketball team.On Dec. 12 the Titans faced the Hanover Wildcats and lost 36-56.It was 9-5 after one period in favor of the Wildcats but a 15-4 second quarter put Hanover up 24-9 at the half. The Titans were competitive in the second half, outscoring Hanover 15-14 in the third quarter and was outscored 12-18 in the fourth.Colton Kuhlman had 14 points, two rebounds, two assists for Thayer Central while Laken Wiedel had 12 points, four boards, three assists for the Titans.Gavin Kroll had eight points for Thayer Central and a team high two steals.Murphy Sudbeck had a team high seven rebounds for the Titans and Blake Gunn led with four assists. Sudbeck also had two blocks in the game.On Dec. 19 the Titans faced H&H (Henderson) and dropped the contest 22-59.The Titans lost to Fairbury 27-36 on Dec. 20. Jeffs Bounce BackAfter a loss to Milford last week, the Fairbury boys basketball team brushed themselves off and continued to dominate basketball games.The Jeffs crushed Centennial on Dec. 16 with a huge second quarter scoring flurry.FHS was up 16-12 after the first quarter and outscored the Broncos 23-9 in the second quarter to go up 39-21 at the half. Down the stretch, FHS outscored Centennial 23-16 to close out the game.It was senior Jonah Parrack’s turn to carry the offense for FHS, lighting up the Broncos for 24 points. He also had seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and a team leading three blocks.Junior Jerik Mans had 14 points for FHS with five rebounds, two assists and a team high five steals.James Martin finished with nine points, three rebounds, three assists and Brodie Prellwitz had seven points, four rebounds ,three assists, one steal and one block. Freshman Wesley Timmons added two boards, two assists and two steals to the cause of the Jeffs.It was a defensive battle on Dec. 20 against Thayer Central and the Jeffs came away with a 36-27 win.Griffins Pick Up Win Over LewistonThe Diller-Odell boys basketball team lost to Johnson-Brock on Dec. 16, 28-75.The Griffins were led by Xavier Zabokrtsky with seven points and had two rebounds and a team high three steals. Senior Jacob Novotyny had two points, one rebound and a team high three blocks.Jake Behrends finished with six points, one assist, one board for Diller-Odell while Peyton Humphreys had six points, four rebounds, two assists for the Griffins.Jack Phillips had three points, one assist, a steal and two blocks for Diller-Odell.It was 34-21 at the half, but a second half scoring drought proved to be what stopped a comeback by the Griffins. Johnson-Brock outscored the Griffins 35-7 in the third quarter and 6-0 in the fourth.On Dec. 19, the Griffins defeated Lewiston in easy fashion, 53-33.The Griffins had a trio of scorers to lead the offense, led by 15 points from Peyton Humphreys. Creyton Heidemann had 13 points and Jack Phillips added 10 points.Humphreys finished with a double double with 15 rebounds (11 offensive) and five assists with a steal. Heidemann had eight boards, two assists and a steal while Phillips had one board, two assist and one steal.Jake Behrends picked up four points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals while senior Jacob Novotny had 10 rebounds (nine defensive), four points, one assist and a team leading four blocks. Raiders Pull Out WinIt is never over until the final buzzer. On Dec. 19, HTRS faced Southern in boys basketball and the Raiders came away with a 58-52 win.HTRS led 16-11 after one quarter and held a 35-19 lead at the half over Southern. In the second half, the Raiders came out firing on all cylinders, starting the comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 16-11 in the quarter to cut the lead to 11, down 35-46.An explosive fourth quarter led the Raiders over the Titans, outscoring HTRS 23-6 to get the victory.So far this season Paxx Adams leads the Raiders in points per game (13), rebounds per game (7.3) and assists per game (3.5). Weston Whitwer leads Southern in steals per game (2.8) while Blake Meece leads in blocks per game (.5). Mustangs Win EasilyMeridian’s boys basketball team cruised to a 53-36 win on Dec. 16 over Sterling.Meridian freshman Braxton Davis showed his shooting prowess, hitting 5-of-7 shots for 13 points for Meridian with two rebounds and two steals.The duo of Jayton Jones and Christian Guenther each had 12 points. Jones had a double double with 12 rebounds and had four assists and a steal while Guenther had six boards and one steal.Landon Peterson had eight points, six rebounds, one steal and one block for the Mustangs while Chase Schafer had six points, two boards and an assist. Beau Bartels had seven boards, two assists for Meridian.Superior slipped by Meridian on Dec. 19, 50-40.So far this season, Jayton Jones leads the Mustangs in points per game (12.8) and rebounds per game (9.8) while Beau Bartels leads the team in assists per game (2.4) with Maddox Haake leading the Mustangs in steals per game (1.3) and Landon Peterson leads in blocks per game (1.2).Trojans Cruise Past Johnson-BrockTri County’s boys basketball team lost a tight game against Falls City Sacred Heart on Dec. 16. The Trojans were up 19-8 after one quarter but a 22-7 score in the second quarter put the Irish up over the Trojans 26-30 at the half.Sacred Heart outscored T.C. 20-14 in the third quarter and T.C. tried to rally with a 19-17 fourth quarter.Drew Siems continues to have the hot hand on offense for the Trojans. He scored 27 points with seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block for the Trojans. Zach Vossler also had an outstanding offensive game for T.C. with 17 points, five rebounds and an assist. Henry Kapke helped Tri County with eight points, four boards, four assists. Jason Wehrman had two steals, five rebounds, six points for the Trojans.On Dec. 19, the Trojans faced Johnson-Brock and easy, consistent scoring led to a 47-36 win.The Trojans were up 11-9 after one quarter and held a 22-17 lead at the half. Tri County had a 16-11 advantage in the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 9-8 in the fourth to close out the game.Siems once again was on fire with his offense, scoring 26 points with eight rebounds, two assists and four steals. Zach Vossler had eight points, eight rebounds and one assist while Caleb Schnuelle had two boards and a team high four assists with one steal.Wolverines Drop TwoFacing Sandy Creek on Dec. 19, the Wilber-Clatonia boys basketball team lost 27-62. After a strong first quarter, outscoring Sandy Creek 11-10, a 17-2 run by the Cougars put the Wolverines down 13-27. Sandy Creek outscored W-C 35-14 in the second half.On Dec. 20, the Wolverines lost to Fillmore Central 45-60.
