Area Softball Season Starts

Thunder Ready To RumbleThe Southern/Diller-Odell Thunder stumble in the first game as they are shut out with the final score reaching 0-12 on Aug. 24. Two hits were mustered up by S.D.O with those coming by Reegan Lauby and Reece Barnard. The S.D.O Thunder will be back home on Thursday as they host Falls City. FHS Picks Up Two WinsThe Fairbury Lady Jeffs have a mixed bag of an opening week as they go 2-2. Fairbury started the season off as they hosted Freeman on Aug. 22.The Jeffs made a solid effort in the bottom of the third bringing three runs across, but unfortunately were unable to get anymore as the final score in that game would reach 3-13. In that game Logan Wentz was able to bring in two RBI going one for one at the plate while Rylee Gill went two-for-two and scored one run.On Aug. 24 Fairbury was at the York Invite. Fairbury once again had struggled to get the offense going as they would fall in that game with a final score of 2-11. A total of four hits from Fairbury with a double from Izzy Ohlde. Mailee Garner and Addison Marschman each contributed one hit and one RBI while Kate Hynek also had one hit as well.Against Cozad, FHS would etch the first win of the season with a final score of 7-6. In a game with each team mirroring their efforts, Fairbury and Cozad put up four runs each in the first inning. Fairbury would fall behind as Cozad brought in one run each for the second and third inning. Fairbury showed great resilience as they brought in one run for the bottom of the fourth, and fifth while tying it at 6-6.During the bottom of the sixth it was Regan Kapke grounding out to bring in the final run to take the lead and victory home. Kate Hynek was the winning pitcher as she went six innings allowing six hits, three walks, two runs and three strikeouts. At the plate, a total of seven hits for Fairbury with Mailee Garner leading the team going two-for-three with one stolen base and brought in two RBI. Rylee Gill led the team with three RBI and scored one run going one for three. Izzy Ohlde, Lauren Wanamaker, Logan Wentz and Regan Kapke each contributed one hit as well. The one hit that each came from Wentz and Kapke was a double and each had brought in one RBI as well. Wentz, Wanamaker and Ohlde had also contributed one stolen base. The final game for Fairbury, FHS fought their way to a tough 10-8 victory against the Crusaders. Fairbury was led by Izzy Ohlde, going three-for-four scoring three runs, hitting two doubles and brought in two RBI. Addison Marschman was able to get one hit and finished with two RBI as she went one-for-three at the plate. Logan Wentz, Regan Kapke, Lauren Wanamaker and Rylee Gill each contributed one hit to the column while Gill, Wanamaker, Morgan Hansmire and Mailee Garner each had one RBI as well. Sam Schmidt came away with the win going four innings allowing eight hits, eight runs (five earned) with no walks and K’s.
