Beatrice Man Charged With Shoplifting

Tyler J. Lange, 35, of Beatrice, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, September 15. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Lange is charged with shoplifting, with a value of less than $500, a class 2 misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The defendant may also be responsible for restitution.The defendant is represented by Public Defender Scott Gropp, who requested a continuance. According to Gropp, he has not yet received video evidence he has requested from the State. Judge Bauer agreed to a two-week continuance.On May 20, at approximately 9:38 p.m., Jefferson County Deputies were dispatched to the Walmart in Fairbury, responding to a report from an asset protection employee.Deputies arrived at Walmart and were shown items that, according to the Walmart employee, the defendant had attempted to steal. The Warrentless Arrest Affidavit indicated, “They were four packets of Magic the Gathering playing cards in a small, shallow cardboard box. The Walmart employee stated that the suspects had them in the bottom of the box concealed under some garden plants they had purchased.”The items totaled $27.The affidavit also notes, “Lange claimed they had slipped down into the box and he had not realized it.”Deputies also reviewed security camera video.Lange and another suspect were placed under arrest at approximately 10:12 p.m. Initially, both suspects were charged with shoplifting. However, charges against the second suspect were later dismissed without prejudice by County Attorney Joseph Casson.Lange was previously convicted in Gage County of theft, with a value of less than $200, a class 2 misdemeanor, on September 15, 2010. He was fined $100 and restitution.A hearing is scheduled for September 29. The defendant is currently free on a $2,500 (10 percent) bond.
