“Beatrice Six” Tax to End this Year

The Gage County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Wednesday, August 24, to end a half-cent countywide sales tax as of January 1, 2023.That tax was put in place to pay off the civil right judgement for the so-called Beatrice Six.There had been some concern among members of the public that, once in place, the tax would become permanent.The Beatrice Six are Thomas Winslow, Ada JoAnn Taylor, Debra Shelden, James Dean, Kathy Gonzalez and the late Joseph White, who were found guilty in 1989 of the 1985 rape and murder of Helen Wilson in Beatrice.
