Blue Springs Man Pleads No Contest to Drug, Weapon Charges

Ryan Holtsclaw, age 43, of Blue Springs, will be sentenced in Gage County Court on October 17, 2022. Sentencing was originally set for September 7, but Rick A. Schreiner, the presiding judge, granted a motion for a continuance.Holtsclaw was originally charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony that carries a possible penalty of two years in prison, 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine; possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person and possession of a deadly weapon while committing a felony, both class 3 felonies, punishable by four years in prison, two years of post-release supervision and a $25,000 fine; and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction.In accordance with a plea agreement, Holtsclaw pleaded no contest to possession of a controlled substance and a reduced charge of first offense carrying a concealed weapon, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The other charges were dismissed.The judge ordered as PSI (Pre-Sentencing Investigation).On February 4, 2022, Gage County Deputies executed a search warrant at a residence in Blue Springs. Holtsclaw was located in a camper in the backyard. According to the Probable Cause for Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, “The camper was searched, per the search warrant and during a search of the camper, the following items were located: a glass meth pipe with white residue, a gray snort straw, numerous syringes (both used and new) a metal marijuana pipe, a wooden pipe, and a knife inside of a sheath. Residue from the pipe pre-tested positive for methamphetamine. The blade length on the knife was approximately 9” in length. Holtsclaw is a convicted felon in both Nebraska and Illinois and cannot possess knives with blade lengths more than 3 1/4. Holtslcaw waived his Miranda Warnings and agreed to speak to me. Holtsclaw stated that he was a convicted felon and the meth pipe was his. Holtsclaw stated that the knife was his and he described it as a ‘machete.’ Holtsclaw stated that he believed he could have the knife. Holtsclaw stated that he had been living in the camper for about a month.”Holtsclaw was arrested at the scene.
