Break Out The Lasso Of Truth

We’ve been covering unfunded mandates, in particular with school districts, over the past couple of years.These have been around for a very long time, a back-door way for governmental agencies to get what they want without raising taxes and putting the impetus on local entities.A recent example is the postcard bill, where the state dictated that entities, such as school districts, must send out postcards with a meeting notice to help better inform the public on possible budget matters. Then, the school district gets a bill to pay for the postcards.This is a way for the higher-ups at the state level to get what they want: get the blood off of their hands in regard to taxes. Send out a postcard about a meeting, get people riled up about it, and put pressure on the school districts to lower levies. This deflects attention from the state having to give more funding to schools in the state.In essence, it is the state saying, “We’re trying to lower property taxes, but it is your school district that is the problem.”If only the ol’ Wonder Woman lasso of truth was real. In this situation, I think school districts would say, “We are trying our best to keep costs down and provide the best education we can.” I believe politicians would say, “We need to do whatever it takes to be re-elected.”Not all politicians act this way, but I have seen enough of politicians in the bigger districts embrace unfunded mandates.
