Broken Records Aren’t That Bad

I do mean to sound like a broken record about this subject. Sometimes it is a good thing to keep repeating something over and over and over.The city and county recently met to discuss law enforcement issues in Fairbury and the drug problem in town was not the main focus.It is a complex issue, I get that, and divulging too much in a meeting can tip people off, I get that, too. Traffic stops can lead to busts. Yes, noted.However, I harken back to the days of when Rick Carmichael was the police chief here and he’d say, repeatedly, ‘If you deal or do drugs in this town, you will be seeing me.’The message was loud and clear to any and all in the community from Carmichael: if you are drug dealer in this town, you will be called Foot Locker, because the PD is going to be kicking their rear end over and over and over.I liked that message. Call me old-fashioned and I know the issue is very complex, but the end result is dragging people out of their homes, vehicles, what-have-you, arresting them, putting them in jail. Good guys win, bad guys lose.To me, the county commissioners have shown foresight in trying to cut the drugs out of the community and have a stance that it will not be tolerated. They have been vocal about cleaning up the town. I feel everyone, the city officials, the county officials, the sheriff’s department, the media, the school, the chamber, every single person, man, woman, child and pet, should be carrying the message loud and proud: Get out of Fairbury with your drugs.
