Child Abuse Suspect Accepts Plea Deal

A Reynolds man facing multiple felonies, including felony child abuse, has accepted a plea agreement.Shane E. Johnson, age 41, appeared in Jefferson County District Court in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, October 2, 2025. David J.A. Bargen was the presiding judge.The defendant was originally facing four charges: intentional child abuse, a class 3A felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine; attempt of a class 3A felony, which is a class 4 felony, punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine; third degree domestic assault, second offense, also a class 3A felony; and obstructing a peace officer, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 for each count. Johnson was previously convicted of domestic assault in Jefferson County in 2018.On April 8, 2025, deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to an address in Reynolds. According to the arrest affidavit, a female subject called 911 to report Shane Johnson was, “beating the windows out of her car.” Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to interview the defendant. According to the deputy that filed out the affidavit, “While trying to question Shane, he repeatedly tried to step around me to make advances towards the female while yelling obscenities at her.”The deputy reported warning that he would be placed in handcuffs if he did not cooperate, “Shane then yelled in my face to place him in handcuffs. I was able to cuff Shen (sic) without incident. However, as we started walking towards my patrol vehicle, Shane became actively resistive and began thrashing around and trying to lock his legs into place to prevent travel to the patrol unit.”A deputy deployed a taser while attempting to place the defendant into custody.In accordance with the plea agreement, Johnson pleaded no contest to second offense third degree domestic assault. The remaining charges will be dismissed. Sentencing is scheduled for November 6, 2025.The defendant remains in custody with a $7,500 (10 percent) bond as of press time.
