City Accepts Bid For I Street Improvements

The City of Fairbury has accepted a bid to create a paving district on a portion of I Street.The paving project is the result of a petition, first brought by the Faith Lutheran Church in Fairbury to the city in 2020, asking to pave a portion of I Street from 17th Street to approximately 563 feet south. The request met the percentage requirements and has been signed by more than 60 percent of the abutting property owners.On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, the Fairbury City Council held a public hearing to consider the sufficiency of the petition and to determine whether there is any grounds to deny the petition. Although there were some objections from members of the public, no grounds were found to deny the petition and, at that same meeting, the city council adopted Ordinance 3097, creating a paving district to make improvements to this street.At a meeting on August 17th, the City Council awarded Kirkham, Michael and Associates Inc. the agreement for professional services for the I Street Improvement Project. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $137,792.00.Bids for construction were received on October 20th. The city received two qualified bid proposals. The low bid was from RL Tiemann Construction, Inc., located in Beatrice, in the amount of $136,169.00. Kirkham, Michael and Associates Inc. reviewed the quantities and bid documents for inconsistencies. Finding none, RL Tiemann was recommended to provide construction services for the project. The City Council voted unanimously to accept the bid.
