City Begins Dismantling Cooling Tower

The City of Fairbury has begun removing panels that surround the cooling tower just south of the Fairbury Municipal Power Plant at 121 3rd Street. At a meeting on Tuesday, November 16, the Fairbury City Council voted to demolish the structure.This cooling tower was designed to cool the water that fed the power plant when necessary. According to City Administrator Robert Messbarger, even when the power plant was operational, the cooling tower was rarely utilized.The panels on the outside of the cooling tower have been tested and have been found to contain asbestos.
