City Of Fairbury To Increase Trash Rates

By Gordon HopkinsThe City of Fairbury votes to increase the rates for trash collection at a meeting Tuesday evening, November 21, 2023.A three percent increase for services was proposed for both residential customers within the municipality and those with rural pickup: residential $19.50 to $20.09 and rural residential $22.50 to $23.18.Also proposed was a $1.00 per cubic yard increase for customers with dumpsters: residential $9 to $10 and commercial $8 to $9.The city currently has 1510 customers on the residential rate and 114 customers on the rural residential rate. Non-dumpster commercial users are not currently specified in the current ordinance. The proposed new rate for this service would be the residential rate times the number of pick-ups per week.The current City of Fairbury sanitation rates were adopted on June 21, 2011. According to a memorandum from Erin Reimer, City Clerk, “With the continued volatile inflation status, increase of fuel prices, equipment needs, and other maintenance a review of the rates was conducted by staff. The 2011 ordinance contains practices in which the city does not utilize, such as: the collection time per month in minutes and does not provide options for the lease amount for dumpsters, nor reference purchased dumpsters or a senior rate.”The proposed ordinance includes the price of leased dumpsters as well, with a proposed $5 increase for all sizes.According to Reimer, “The purchase price of dumpsters from 2011 to today has almost doubled in cost, this increase would give the city the ability to capture the cost in a timely manner. Leased dumpsters are the expense of the city when repairs or replacement is needed. With the added $5 increase, the city is able to lessen the amount of time the leased dumpster would pay for itself to an estimated decrease of 1-year per dumpster size.”Customers that own their own dumpsters are charged per cubic foot per month.This proposed ordinance would also include a delivery fee for those purchasing dumpsters. Reimer noted the city is charged a freight cost and in the past has not passed this cost to the consumer.Also included in this proposal is a senior rate, that would allow those 62 years of age and older to apply for a reduced sanitation rate upon qualifying circumstances.Tghe new rates are set by Ordinance 3117, which states, “This ordinance shall be in full force and effect upon its passage, approval and publications as provided by law.Also on the agenda was the renewal of the trash collection contract with the Village of Jansen. However, Jansen had already opted to sign a five-year contract with Schmidt’s Trucking and Sanitation of Fairbury to provide trash collection services for the village at a meeting on Monday, November 13, 2023. Schmidt’s offered a lower rate than Fairbury.
