Letters Policy

Letters Policy:
The newspaper welcomes the opinions of its readers. Anyone who delivers a submission for publication in the newspaper’s “Letters to the Editor” section agrees to give the newspaper the right to publish it in print and digital form. The newspaper reserves the right to refuse to publish any submission. The newspaper reserves the right to end debate on a topic after both sides have had ample chance to express their views.
Submissions should be 500 words or less. Submissions over the word limit will be revised at the editor’s discretion. All submissions are subject to editing for style, mechanics and grammar. Submissions containing language or content that is blatantly offensive, or that the editor feels is inappropriate, will not be published.
Submissions should focus on the writer’s opinions, not facts. Any statement of facts not generally known or accepted to be true will be cut.
All letters must be signed by the writer, with address and phone number provided for verification only. Submissions will be printed with the author’s name and city of residence only. Anonymous submissions will not be published.
Submissions that contain statements that are libelous or slanderous will not be published, nor will submissions that include attacks of a personal nature.
Submissions written in response to other contributors to the “Letters to the Editor” section should address the issue at hand, rather than mentioning the contributor by name, and should refer to the headline and date the letter was published. Submissions referring to news stories should also mention the headline and date of publication.
Submissions are limited to one submission per month. Submissions received from persons outside the newspaper’s circulation area will not be published, nor will submissions published elsewhere.
Letters regarding an election issue or candidate will not be published in the issue immediately preceding election day.
All columns and letters on the opinion page are the views of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the newspaper.
All questions regarding submissions under this policy should be directed to timothy@fairburyjournalnews.com.
